Aberystwyth Town chairman Donald Kane has confirmed that the club’s Director of Football Neville Powell has now left his post by mutual agreement.
Powell joined the Club in June 2017 as manager, and after a difficult start he led the Seasiders to Welsh Premier League safety, as well as a Welsh Cup Final in his first season at Park Avenue.
His second season in charge saw a five match winning run in the months of October and November 2018, to take the Seasiders to the brink of the top six, with Powell picking up the Welsh Premier Manager of the Month award.
Powell, who later became the Director of Football, has been a big part of an expanded management team, along Mathew Bishop and assistant Gavin Allen.
They led the club to the semi finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup this season, and Powell has helped Aber recruit a number of key players both in the summer and in the recent transfer window.
“On behalf of the Club, I would like to place on record our thanks to Nev for sharing with us his incredible experience, his determination and dedication to the Black and Green cause over the past two and a half years,” said Club chairman Kane.
“The great times we shared with Nev mean that he will always be welcomed back at Park Avenue, and we wish him the best for the future."
Powell became the Director of Football at the Club in March 2018, when he was unable to secure a position on a Pro Licence course in time to comply with the UEFA Licensing requirements.
The club then appointed the Northern Ireland-based coach Seamus Heath to the role of first team manager, but when he was unable to continue Matthew Bishop took on the role.
Former player Gavin Allen, who holds a Uefa A licence coaching qualification, was appointed as the assistant manager last year, following the departure of former assistant boss Wayne Jones.
“I would like to say how much I enjoyed my time at Aber. I met a lot of special people, and I’d like to thank everyone at the Club, including the volunteers, the directors and of course the players and supporters, who been magnificent in my time there,” commented Powell.
“I hope that I have left the Club in a better position than when I started, and hopefully it can kick on from here.
“I would like to wish everyone at Aber Town Football Club the best for the future.”
Powell had previously led Bangor City to a Welsh Premier League championship title in 2010/11, and famously had successive Welsh Cup Final wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
He also won the League Cup as the manager of Connah’s Quay in 1996, and has won six Welsh Premier Manager of the Month awards, and two Welsh Premier Manager of the Season awards.
Powell began his playing career at Tranmere Rovers, making a scoring debut for the club at the age of 17 in 1981 in a match against Torquay. He left the club in 1984, having made 86 appearances for the Prenton Park club, scoring four goals.
He went on to spend eight years with Bangor City, playing for the club in the first season of the Welsh Premier. In 1993, he took over as player-manager of Connah’s Quay, where his playing career came to an end following a broken leg sustained on the opening day of the 1996–97 season, having won the League Cup.
After 14 years in charge at Connah’s Quay, which included winning the Welsh League Cup in 1996, Powell took over as manager of Bangor City in 2007, winning the league title, and a hat-trick of Welsh Cup triumphs.
Under Powell, Bangor also beat Finnish Club FC Honka in the Europa League 3–2 on aggregate in July 2010.
