NEVILLE Powell says he is looking for a positive response from his Aberystwyth Town side after they followed up a midweek exit in the Nathaniel MG Cup with a 1-0 home defeat to Barry Town.
An experimental Aber side had lost 3-1 at Welsh League division one outfit Cambrian and Clydach on Tuesday evening, before Clayton Green’s 17th minute strike was enough to earn the Dragons three points at Park Avenue on Saturday.
“We never really got going,” admitted Powell. “It was a poor performance really, but that’s not taking anything away from Barry Town, who I thought were an excellent side.
“We’re normally good for four or five chances at home, but they’ve marshalled us well and I don’t think their keeper has had much to do all afternoon. It was just that type of game.
“At 1-0 down anything can happen, and we were just hoping that a ball on the break would drop for us, but unfortunately it never did. When we took Alan Goodall off, there was going to be spaces at the back, and they could have had a couple more in the last 10 minutes.”
Powell added: “There were too many loose passes and slack marking, we did not get a lot of decisions off the officials, and that was that.
“We lost Ryan (Edwards) early on, and Joe Phillips has come on, having played a full game in the League Cup on Tuesday, but it’s no excuse, we had enough there to do better.
“We never really got to grips with them all afternoon, and it was a bad day at the office.”
Aberystwyth must now regroup from their fourth league defeat of the season as they prepare to face second-from-bottom Cefn Druids at The Rock on Friday night.
“We will take it, train hard on Tuesday, and as I’ve said to the players, we’ll now move on to the next game. October is going to be a big month, so we have got to remain positive.
“It’s about how we react now, and we’ll look forward to the game against Cefn Druids.
“The boys are a bit down now, because they know they’ve been beaten at home, but fingers crossed we can get it sorted for next week.
“In this league teams are beating each other week in, week out, so we’ve got to make sure we keep players’ heads up, and go again.”
Wingman Ryan Edwards is hopeful of being fit for Friday’s clash, despite picking up a hamstring injury during last weekend’s defeat, whilst Joe Phillips and Geoff Kellaway are pushing for places in the starting side.
Friday’s hosts Cefn Druids have endured a difficult start to their league campaign, picking up just seven points from their opening eight games, and currently lying 11th in the league table.
Meanwhile Aberystwyth Town have re-appointed Neville Powell to the post of first team manager, after Seamus Heath resigned his post in August.
Powell, who has been running the team as a director of football, is applying to attend a Pro Licence course to satisfy UEFA Licensing requirements.
