TWO late extra time goals earned Pwllheli a Cookson Cup semi-final place with a 5-3 win against a Penrhyndeudraeth side that had led twice in an exciting tie, only to succumb right at the end.

Pwllheli had opened the scoring when the unfortunate Ben Jones deflected Barry Evans’s angled cross-shot past visiting goalkeeper Rob Watson.

Penrhyn, however, levelled matters through Steve Jones, whose neat finish left keeper Jiri Kober beaten.

The second half sprang to life on the hour, when referee Kelvin Lewis pointed to the spot, and Penrhyn’s Meilir Williams swept the penalty low into the net.

Pwllheli were back on level terms at 2-2 thanks to Mark Jones’s 65th minute goal, swept in from the edge of the box, but Penrhyn looked to be winners-in-waiting courtesy of Iwan Lane’s six yard header on 78 minutes.

Watched by a 150-plus crowd, the tie’s concluding stages brought one last raid by Pwllheli, right on 90 minutes, and it worked, as sub Jamie Underwood netted close in to force extra-time.

The two teams looked tired as the additional half-hour was played out, and no chances were created until the 118th minute, when Pwllheli’s Carl Jones fired strongly beyond Watson.

Penrhyn’s fate was then compounded when Mark Jones completed the scoring.Read the full report in this week's Dwyfor edition
