PWLLHELI, who have FAW Trophy pedigree, as semi-finalists six seasons ago, booked progress to the third round this time with a stirring 4-2 victory at opponents Llanuwchllyn.
The match was a collective triumph for the Jones boys, who scored all their goals, with Carl Jones providing the opener, Jake Jones scoring a brace, and Mark Jones with the clincher.
Ben Ogilvey’s squad were on a mission of discovery in visiting unknown opponents and their determination to extend their early season unbeaten run soon brought them rewards.
Pwllheli’s opening goal arrived on 12 minutes from Carl Jones and the lead was doubled by Jake on 22, but then another gilt-edged chance went begging on 29, when Carl blazed a penalty over the home team’s target.
The visitors’ convincing first half show did yield a timely third goal on 40 minutes, when Jake netted his second goal, but the second period brought a Llanuwchllyn revival, as they slammed in two replies, through AJ Galdo and Owain Williams.
The game was wide open again, at just 3-2 for Pwllheli, but the Welsh Alliance visitors’ nerves were eased by Mark Jones’s vital goal on 75 minutes.
Pwllheli’s debutant goalkeeper Taylor Miranda, a 17-year-old product of the club’s junior set-up, also made several vital saves at important stages.
Penrhyndeudraeth’s past successes in the FAW Trophy, including being the finalists in 2015, counted for nothing when their latest foray into the national knockout brought failure at the first hurdle, with a 2-1 home defeat against Llandyrnog United.
Gareth Piercey’s hosts at Maes-y-Parc, who had won their previous three matches and had drawn 1-1 at Llandyrnog in the league in August, were beaten by goals by Daniel Lloyd on 17 minutes and Ross Gilbert on 68.
A reply by Jack Jones virtually on the stroke of half-time had offered Penrhyn the hope of better things to come in the second spell, but the home forwards could not find any other chink in Llandyrnog’s defensive armour.
Elsewhere, the Welsh Alliance division one’s top three teams won their ties to progress to the next stage.
Leaders Llangefni Town beat neighbours Gaerwen 3-0, with goals from Daniel Thomas just on half-time, then Liam Morris on 54 minutes and Allan Mark Owen with 11 minutes to go.
Nantlle Vale, who are second in the table, did well to overcome fourth-placed Llanrwst United 4-2 in a tie that stretched to extra-time, after a 2-2 deadlock with 90 minutes played.
Vale had trailed twice in the first period, to Llanrwst goals by Aaron Jones on four minutes and Mike Lundstrom on 17, before responding through an own-goal on 8 minutes and then Aaron Davies-Thomas on 24 minutes.
Nantlle’s ultimate take-over in the added half-hour involved winning goals scored by Adam Jackson on 97 minutes and Daniel Evans on 119.
James Phillips scored a hat-trick as third-from-top Llanrug United empiled up a 7-0 tally at Llandudno Amateurs, with Carl Griffiths and Gavin Lloyd-Jones also both scoring twice.
Meanwhile Felinheli were 5-0 winners at Llanfairpwll and Llanberis made it 5-2 at Amlwch Town, where David Jones completed a hat-trick.
Mynydd Llandygai also enjoyed a treble from Craig Whelan in their 7-4 win over Aberffraw, while Glan Conwy edged out in a 3-2 defeat at Llannefydd, and Llandudno Albion finished 3-1 up on Holyhead Town.
