PWLLHELI and Abergele, just two points apart in the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance division one mid-table, proved to be closely matched in their 1-1 draw on the Recreation Ground.
The goals were scored midway through each half, with Abergele’s Antonio Jacovelli netting on 25 minutes, and Pwllheli earning their point thanks to captain Adam Hall after 78 minutes.
Pwllheli have an immediate opportunity to improve on that result against Abergele this Saturday, when they visit their opponents for a return league encounter at Llandudno’s 3G facility.
Penrhyndeudraeth meanwhile missed a chance to close the gap on leaders Glantraeth, as they were beaten 2-1 at Llandudno Junction by a late goal.
Merrick Knight struck on 84 minutes to give the hosts the edge over the second-from-top title contenders.
Penrhyn, who are just four points off the pace, first fell behind to James Hobson’s goal for the Junction on 23 minutes, but were back on par, thanks to Neil Thomas scoring on 65.
With all to play for in the closing stages, Penrhyn were left to rue some costly misses, before Knight secured the win for the hosts.
Barmouth and Dyffryn United completed their first double of the campaign as they won 3-2 at bottom club Glan Conwy.
Llyr Hughes’s team had to come from behind, though, after being two goals down in the first half, through strikes from Chris Lloyd on 10 minutes and Haydn Griffiths after 26.
In between, Barmouth had been awarded a penalty, which Shane Jones slammed against the underside of the bar, but the referee ruled that it had not crossed over the goalline.
Barmouth found the net through Chris Wilkins on 36 minutes, following Carwyn Jones’ long throw.
The evenly contested second half swung Barmouth’s way when return debutant Carl Ryan scored a header on 65 minutes, and Shane Jones hit the winner 10 minutes later.
Elsewhere St Asaph City squeezed two goals late in each half to beat Llanberis 4-0, the scorers being Jake Walker and Paul Fleming on 38 and 45 minutes, the latter from a penalty, and Sam Roberts on 85 and 90.
Greenfield and Nantlle Vale drew 0-0 in their mid-table fixture at the Deesiders’ Alpha Park ground.MAWDDACH CHALLENGE CUPLeague leaders Glantraeth took time off from their title campaign to pursue their Mawddach Cup ambitions, having lost in last season’s final to Penrhyndeudraeth by a 4-1 score.
The Bodorgan side made progress to the third round with a 3-0 win over Llanrwst United, with goals from Kieron Jeffries on 59 minutes and Corrig McGonigle with a quick-fire double on 71 and 75 minutes.
Also through to the semi-finals are Llanrug United, as 4-1 winners over Gaerwen, despite having trailed to a 24th minute penalty kick from Chris Bennett.
The Eithin Duon hosts’ four-fold response was provided by Henrick Williams after 29 minutes, Luke Phillips after 34, Carl Griffiths after 37 and Alan Mark Owen on 89 minutes.
Trearddur Bay United progressed to the last-four the hard way, when needing extra-time to overcome spirited hosts Amlwch Town 7-3, after the rivals had been deadlocked at 3-3 with 90 minutes played.
Trearddur’s Bryn Roberts netted a hat-trick on 52, 79 and 112 minutes and Asa Thomas also scored a treble on 65, 95 and 118, plus Danny Connelly on 99.
Glantraeth face Trearddur Bay in the semis on March 18, while Llanrug will take on the winners of this Saturday’s delayed tie between Llangefni Town and Llandyrnog United.
Llangefni were the Welsh Alliance’s remaining flag-bearers in the FAW Trophy, and they beat FC Nomads 1-0 in their fifth round tie, courtesy of Craig Evans’ 64th minute penalty kick.
