PENRHYNCOCH’s resilient defence kept a third successive clean sheet as they battled to an excellent goalless draw away at Rhyl, to consolidate their top six position in the JD Cymru North table.
After back-to-back home wins over Corwen and Gresford Athletic, this was an excellent away point for Gari Lewis’ men, and they will be looking to continue to build their momentum against Colwyn Bay at Cae Baker this weekend.
The Roosters were indebted to keeper Leigh Jenkins for making a crucial penalty save to deny Asa Hamilton, and the defence and midfield worked hard to limit the chances of the illustrious hosts.
With six regular team players missing, and a few playing through illness, it was always going to be a massive test for the Roosters, but manager Lewis will take heart for the character shown by his side.
Early chances had seen Aaron Hassall have a shot saved by Jenkins, who was to be the busier of the two goalkeepers, with the hosts having the majority of play.
The Penrhyn custodian also did well to deny Steve Thomas, but Rhyl’s best chance came in the 23rd minute, when Jenkins was adjudged to have brought Ben Nash to the ground for a penalty.
Asa Hamilton stepped up to take the spot kick, but after converting two penalties the previous weekend, he was denied as keeper Jenkins made an excellent save.
At the other end Penrhyn’s Ifan Burrell fired wide, but back came the home side as Hamilton had a headed opportunity saved by Jenkins, to ensure that it remained goalless at the half-time break.
Penrhyncoch produced a determined defensive display in the second half, with the majority of Rhyl’s scoring chances coming from corners and set-pieces.
Nash headed wide and Dave MacIntyre fired over for the Lilywhites as a fully committed Penrhyncoch defence held firm to extend their unbeaten run to three matches.
• Llandudno ended the only remaining unbeaten record in JD Cymru North with a dramatic 3-2 victory at Bangor City as penalties from Dean Seager and Robbie Parry and a winner from substitute Alfons Fosu-Mensah sealed the points.
Aldair Neto and Emmanuel Agyeman had netted the replies for the Citizens.
Prestatyn hit back to win 2-1 at Porthmadog to maintain a five-point lead at the top as a Rob Hughes penalty and Jack Higgins cancelled out John Owen’s goal.
Flint Town moved up to second with a 7-0 win against Llangefni, with hat-tricks by Nathan Brown and Mark Cadwallader and a single by Danny Andrews.
Sammy Litchfield and Adam Davies earned Guilsfield a 2-0 win at Gresford Athletic, whilst Iwan Matthews and Matthew Evans both scored twice as Llanrhaeadr won 4-2 at Buckley, who were 2-0 up through Callum Humphries’ brace.
Colwyn Bay outscored Llanfair United 4-2, with Mitch Bryant netting twice, with Sion Edwards and Tom McCready scoring. Gethin Jones hit a brace for Llanfair.
