RHYS Jones netted four goals to steer St Dogmaels to a convincing 6-3 home win over Crannog, to put the Saints nine points clear at the top of the Costcutter Ceredigion League division one.

Jones, who has been in outstanding form this season, is now the league’s joint leading goal scorer with 18 goals to his name, along with Llanboidy hot shot Rhys Jenkins, and the reigning champions look a decent bet to retain their silverware.

Crannog took the field with a handful of 17 year-olds, including Jack Taylor, who scored one of the best goals of the game - but the Llangrannog men were unable to match recent exploits against Cardigan Town when they completed a league and cup double over the Magpies.

The visitors started the game brightly enough, but they were fortunate to keep a clean sheet in the opening half hour as skipper Jason Williams hit the woodwork, and Louis Harding had a goal disallowed for offside.

The visitors managed to weather the storm and they took the lead five minutes from the break when Saints striker Peter Almond scored a peach of an own goal - but the Saints hit back a few minutes later when Rhys Jones latched on to a cross from Harding to level matters.

The Saints came flying out of the blocks in the second half and took the lead when a defensive mix up gifted Harding a goal, and a second by Rhys Jones from the penalty spot put the hosts clear.

Jones completed his hat-trick with a fine volley, before Harding added his second to make it 5-1 - but Crannog’s player-manager Davies reduced the deficit when he took advantage of a poor clearance to thread the ball home from a tight angle.

Jones bagged his fourth of the match with another penalty, before talented teen Jack Taylor claimed a late consolation with a superb strike to complete the scoring.

The scheduled matches between Aberporth and Llandysul and Llanboidy versus Ffostrasol were called off due to waterlogged pitches.

Division two leaders New Quay moved eight points clear of nearest rivals Crymych, with a 9-2 demolition of St Dogmaels Reserves.

Ollie Edwards led the way for the Greens with a fine hat-trick, and there was a brace apiece for Jack Chetwynd and Dylan Morgans.

Also on the scoresheet for Quay were Charlie Dent and Glenn Baldwin, whilst Casey Walters and Cameron Christie replied for the Saints.

Crymych travelled to face Bargod Rangers at Parc Puw confident of completing a league double, after firing five goals past the same opposition a fortnight earlier.

The Preseli men hit the net through Sion Dafydd Vaughan, Llifon Howell and an own goal, but Jack Fisher, George Hicks and Tom Rogers secured a 3-3 draw.

Aberaeron Reserves picked up their eighth win of the season as they beat Crannog Reserves 4-0, with goals scored by Endaf Williams, Dafydd Roberts, Lamin Manjang and Keelan Noble.

The division two match between Ffostrasol Reserves and Maesglas was called off, as were division three games between Maesglas Reserves and Llandysul Reserves, and Cardigan Town Reserves against Llanboidy Reserves. Newcastle Emlyn Reserves’ South Cards Cup first round encounter with Felinfach Reserves was also called off.
