COSTCUTTER Ceredigion League leaders St Dogmaels dropped their first points of the season when they were held to a 1-1 draw by rivals Crannog - but a win this weekend against Llanboidy will virtually seal the division one title.

Crannog, who had secured a place in the final of the Ceredigion League Cup with a 3-2 win over Felinfach in midweek, took the lead on 20 minutes when Brynley Morris breezed passed a couple of defenders and fired home.

The Saints, fresh from their Emrys Morgan Cup semi-final win in midweek, finally equalised with just 10 minutes to go when Rhys Jones’ quickly-taken free kick flew into the net.

Lampeter, still hurting from that Emrys Morgan Cup exit on penalties, lost 2-0 against a Cardigan side that had seen Josh Mellor hit the woodwork from a free kick, and Angus Reckord blast a penalty against the foot of the post.

Owen Williams’ scrambled effort also rebounded off the crossbar, but the deadlock was broken when player-boss Terry Witts and his goal keeper collided, and the ball hit the net.

A second goal arrived just seconds before the interval when an attempted clearance bounced off Alun Williams and into the path of striker Owen Williams, who duly tapped home.

A hat-trick from Tomos Rogers helped steer Llanboidy to a comfortable 4-0 success over Aberaeron Reserves, and there was a goal also by Martin Owen for the Carmarthenshire men.

Llandysul meanwhile warmed up for their midweek League Cup semi-final clash with St Dogmaels with a 5-0 win over relegation favourites Bargod Rangers. Mathew Newbold and Chris Harris led the way with a couple of goals each, and there was one also for midfielder Lewis Jones with a well struck free kick.

Elsewhere in division one, Keiran Boyes and Huw Davies struck goals for Felinfach in their 2-2 draw at Newcastle Emlyn, whilst Huw Jonah Jones was on target for the home side.

SOUTH CARDS CUP

COSTCUTTER Ceredigion League division two champions Dewi Stars eased into the semi-finals of the South Cards Cup with a 6-0 win over Llandysul Reserves - but it took them well into the second half to make absolutely sure as their hosts competed for the first hour.

The Stars took an early lead through Marc Jones, but after Adrian Davies had made an excellent save from Gethin Thomas’ penalty, Llandysul settled and the Swallows were indeed unlucky not to equalise when they hit the post.

The Stars, however, doubled the lead on the stroke of half time when Oscar Cayo Evans netted from close range, and a good half-time talking to for the rusty visitors, who hadn’t played for a month, saw them up their game. Two excellent finishes from Ifan Thomas and Leon Holmes within minutes of each other gave Stars’ manager John Jones the opportunity to give their loyal bench, who have been so patient all season, plenty of game time.

None responded better than Nathan Driver, who struck twice as soon as he came on for his first senior goals. Rhys Evans, Daniel Thomas and Chris Biddulph also did their chances no harm either with competent performances.
