ABERYSTWYTH Town’s emphatic 7-1 win over visitors Prestatyn left their supporters in seventh heaven, but manager Neville Powell admitted that there is still plenty of work to be done.

Seven different scorers were on the scoresheet as Aber equalled their biggest-ever win in the Welsh Premier League, to move three points clear of their visitors.

They now turn their attention to a massive pre-Christmas test at league leaders The New Saints on Friday evening, before a crucial festive double-header against basement side Carmarthen Town, away on Boxing Day and at home on New Year’s Day.

The Aberystwyth manager said he was delighted with a third successive convincing victory at Park Avenue, but was refusing to get carried away with the result.

“It’s nice to get a win and score a few goals,” said Powell. “At times Prestatyn played some good football, but the quality we have going forward took its toll.

“We’ve scored some good goals, but it was another tough afternoon, because there are no games are easy in this league.

“It was important we won that game today, with Newtown winning on Friday.

“It will have done our goal difference the world of good, but we are just pleased to have got the win. We’d have settled for a 1-0, but to get seven goals is special.”

He added: “Seven different scorers out of the 10 outfield players is unbelievable.

“I’m pleased Chris Hobson got a goal, having worked his socks off all day. It was nice for him to get on the scoresheet.

“We are getting goals from all over the park, and if we continue to do that, we’ll keep moving off the bottom of the table.

“We are on 18 points now, but there is still a lot of work to do before the split.

“We’ll now prepare for the TNS match, and then we’ve got Carmarthen twice, which will be big games for both of us.”

Powell has good reason to be delighted with his side’s home form, following on from a 3-0 win over Newtown and a 4-0 win over Bala Town in the Welsh Cup.

It was the perfect response to the 5-1 defeat at Connah’s Quay the previous weekend, but the Aberystwyth boss has warned that away points are also crucial.

“When I took over, I said that I wanted to make Park Avenue a fortress,” said Powell. “Over our last three games at home, I think we have been doing that.

“We’ve scored 14 goals in three games here, and we look good going forward.

“But in our away matches we’ve got to try and be a bit tighter, and get what we can. In the Bala away match we worked our socks off and came away with a draw.

“We’ve got to get back to picking up whatever points we can away from home, because we now look good at home.”

The Seasiders produced a spirited display before going down 2-1 to The New Saints at Park Avenue in October, and Powell took heart from that performance.

“When we played them here earlier in the season we had a game plan, and we stuck to it,” he said. “We had some hard luck against them at home, but we’ll go there and we’ll give them a good game.

“They’ve got Connahs Quay on Tuesday night, so we’ll take a look at that, and we’ll prepare well for the match this week.

“We got the win today, and we’ll take it into the game against TNS, and enjoy it.”

Meanwhile The New Saints beat one of their main title rivals, Connah’s Quay 3-0 to move four points clear at the top of the Welsh Premier table in midweek.

Jamie Mullan put them ahead within two minutes while Ryan Brobbel’s brilliance doubled their lead soon after before Jon Routledge sealed the win late on.

“I’ve told the players there the standards we have to keep to now,” said Saints boss Scott Ruscoe.

“You always want to be top of the tree and a few points clear – you need that daylight, just in case something happens, like a draw or ending up with a scrappy loss.

“Results don’t always go your way, but the best team is always top of the league, as long as you’re consistent.

“I was happy witha clean sheet and three goals at home. To score inside two minutes and then soon after puts your nerves at rest.

"Performance-wise, I think that was one of our best this season, and we’ll look to build on that against Aberystwyth."
