ABERYSTWYTH Town can expect another tough test when high-flying Bala Town travel to Park Avenue looking to complete a quick-fire double over the Seasiders tonight (Friday, ko 7.45pm).
Matthew Bishop’s men were well-beaten 4-0 at Maes Tegid a fortnight ago, and the Lakesiders extended their winning run to four games with a 3-1 success at Llandudno last weekend.Manager Colin Caton said he was now looking to his side to consolidate their top three position within the Dafabet Welsh Premier League.
“Gap Connah’s Quay and Bangor both lost last week, but it’s not about them," said the Bala boss, whose team are now eight games unbeaten in the league.
“We had a difficult start to the season, with seven or eight injuries, but we weathered that storm, and have done really well.
“Llandudno was another massive result for us, as we’ve tended to struggle there.
“Tonight is the second of three away games for Bala, and it’s important that we pick up more points to keep the pressure on the sides around us.”
He added: "We started well at Llandudno, got a goal, but then drifted out of the game and gave them a goal with a free header. They had a good spell after that, but we defended well and hung in there.”
Nathan Burke serves the last of his three match suspension, and Keiran Smith could be out for several weeks with a hamstring injury.
Lee Owens, however, is back in contention and John Irving is also nearing a return after his shoulder injury.
Meanwhile Aberystwyth manager Matthew Bishop is looking for a positive response from his team, after they followed up a 3-1 defeat to Gap Connah’s Quay with a 4-0 loss at Maes Tegid a fortnight ago.
The Seasiders were left frustrated last weekend when their scheduled match against Cefn Druids had to be postponed due to two floodlight pylons at Park Avenue being destroyed by heavy winds.
Aberystwyth’s inactivity saw them drop to ninth position, but they remain just two points adrift of sixth place, with a game in hand on their rivals.
Defender Sam Rodon starts his suspension after his 92nd minute dismissal against the Lakesiders, but influential captain Luke Sherbon will return refreshed after his one game ban.Aberystwyth will be keen to raise their game in front of their home supporters, with ex-Seasiders Chris Venables, Stuart Jones and Conall Murtagh among the Bala ranks.
Repairs to the damaged floodlights, which fell onto the pitch, are likely to take several weeks, but temporary additional lights ensure that the game will go ahead.
The club is hoping for a big crowd, with Aberystwyth University students being admitted for just £2, which will also include a free hot dog in the clubhouse. University DIGS League teams are expected to be strongly represented on the night.
Meanwhile the home fixture against Cefn Druids, which was called off last Friday, has been rearranged for Saturday, 7 January 2017, with a 1.30pm kick off.
Aberystwyth’s three home games in December have also been moved to 1.30pm kick offs, to allow sufficient time for the floodlights to be fully repaired.
