ABERYSTWYTH Town are looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Carmarthen Town just 10 days ago when they travel to face Mark Aizlewood's side at Richmond Park tonight (Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm).
The Seasiders’ run of 10 consecutive league matches away from home continued to take its toll as the Seasiders slipped to a 4-0 defeat away at Gap Connah’s Quay on Sunday.
A major concern for manager Matthew Bishop is the fact that they have now conceded 14 goals in four straight Welsh Premier defeats, dropping them to second-from-bottom in the table.
The Seasiders, who were without influential skipper Luke Sherbon and Joe Clarke last weekend, are also lacking cutting edge up front, but Bishop could still take positives from their first half display.
A Will Bell own goal was all that separated the sides at the interval, but two goals from big Connah’s Quay marksman Les Davies and a Shelton Payne strike earned the unbeaten Nomads a deserved win.
“I thought we did quite well in the first half, I was quite pleased with our shape and game plan, and we did okay,” said Bishop.
“We did not have that cut and thrust in the final third, but we contained them and we went in at half-time a little confident that we could get something out of this.
“It was a disappointing second half display, Les Davies has probably beaten us up a little bit, and he has taken his goals very well.
“We’re bitterly disappointed. We had a couple of chances - Luke Borrelli had one where he should have finished, and perhaps we may have been awarded a penalty.
“Overall though, it was another disappointing day at the office.
“The fact that we have conceded a number of goals and have not scored is a concern, and something that we have to sort out quickly.
“We are trying to manage injuries, but we have got to dust ourselves down again and try to get something out of the next game.”
After their midweek match at Carmarthen, Aber are back on the road on Saturday to face newcomers Cardiff Met, managed by the ex-Seasider Christian Edwards.
The Archers have shown real potential in a series of narrow defeats this season, and they were lifted by their first league win of the season away at Llandudno last weekend.
Former Swansea City defender Edwards, who made 89 Welsh Premier appearances for Aber and also had a spell as assistant manager, is looking for his side to move off the bottom with another win.
“We’re organised, structured, and the biggest thing that I have in my favour is that each player wants to play for us,” said Edwards.
“There’s no egos, they all get on with their jobs. We did not want to join the league and make up the numbers. We want to challenge where we think we should be, and that’s staying in the division.”
Aberystwyth will take on The New Saints in a ‘home’ fixture at Newtown on Saturday, 1 October, and then travel to Haverfordwest in the League Cup the following Tuesday, before their long-awaited return to Park Avenue against Rhyl on the 3G on Friday, 14 October.
• Meanwhile Aberystwyth Town Ladies offered reason for cheer at the club as they moved up into third position in the Women’s Welsh Premier League with a 2-0 win against Port Talbot Women.
Two goals just after half time was enough to secure the first win of the season for the Seasiders, with Amy Jenkins breaking the deadlock in the 46th minute, and Kelly Thomas securing the points for the home side in the 53rd minute.
