ABERYSTWYTH Town Football Club have further strengthened their squad with three more players ahead of their new JD Welsh Premier League campaign.
Former Bangor City and Rhyl striker Porya Ahmadi has joined the Seasiders, along with keeper Leigh Jenkins and striker Nashawn Blake from local Cymru Alliance club Penrhyncoch.Malcolm Melvin is the latest player to leave Aber, however, after John Owen, Ryan Wade, Ashley Young, Craig Hobson, Sam Kersh and Damien Allen all exited. Iranian-born Porya Ahmadi was Bangor’s top goal scorer in the 2015/16 season, netting eight goals in 29 appearances, having started his footballing career with Sheffield United’s Academy.Porya, or ’Rio’ as he’s also known, also spent time playing for Chorley, Droylsden, New Mills, and most notably Salford City, where he scored hat-tricks in consecutive games back in 2014.He took just nine minutes to find the net for the Seasiders in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Evo-Stik South Premier Division Central side Halesowen Town at Park Avenue on Saturday.Meanwhile Leigh Jenkins and Nashawn Blake have also joined the club from local Cymru Alliance outfit Penrhyncoch, having made significant contributions to Gari Lewis’ side last season.Jenkins has been the regular goalkeeper for the Roosters since they were promoted into the Cymru Alliance, and he was voted as Supporters’ Player of the Season in the past three seasons.Blake is a pacey and energetic striker, who spent a brief spell with the Seasiders when he joined from Aberystwyth University in 2016.Jenkins and Blake were also in action last weekend, along with Aberystwyth’s other new signings in Steff Edwards, Wes Baynes, Alec Williams and Paulo Mendes.Midfielder Melvin, however, has now left the Seasiders due to work commitments, having joined the club from Halesowen on transfer deadline day in January 2017. Ryan Wade has signed for Marine and Ashley Young has joined Buxton, both in the Northern Premier, Craig Hobson has joined National League North side Ashton United, Sam Kersh has signed for Prestatyn, Damien Allen for Newtown and John Owen for Llandudno.The club has confirmed, however, that central defender Ryan Wollacott and attacking midfielder Joe Phillips have followed Declan Walker, Chris Mullock, Geoff Kellaway, Mathew Jones, Lee Jenkins and Jack Rimmer in committing for next season.Wollacott joined from Stourport Swifts in July 2016, and made over 60 appearances in two seasons at the heart of Aber’s defence.Phillips joined the club last summer from Stourport Swifts, and went on to make a total of 29 Welsh Premier League appearances last season, scoring five goals.Meanwhile Aberystwyth continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against National League North side AFC Telford this Friday, 27 July, ko at 8pm. The Bucks are managed by Gavin Cowan and captained by former Newtown stalwart defender Shane Sutton.Aber have added an away fixture to their pre-season schedule, as they travel to face Welsh National League Premier Division side Brickfield Rangers on Tuesday, 31 July, with a 7pm kick-off. The Seasiders had been due to host Brickfield at Park Avenue a fortnight ago.
