ABERYSTWYTH Town’s campaign received a boost on Friday night as a devastating three-goal blitz in six minutes at the end of the first half put the Seasiders on track for a 4-2 win against Llanelli at Stebonheath Park.
Goals by Paolo Mendes on 41 minutes, Wes Baynes on 43 and Geoff Kellaway on 45 effectively set up the Seasiders' first league win since November. Joe Clarke replied on 57 minutes, but Kellaway completed his brace five minutes later, before Joe Hunton responded for the Reds on 64.
After eight games without a win, the magnitude of this match was huge, and on a cold, blustery evening the home groundsmen did a superb job to get the game on, and Aber made the most of the opportunity to play.
The Seasiders started well, with Declan Walker and Wes Baynes putting dangerous balls into the box, and Ash Ruane having a shot blocked. The hosts were also creating chances though as Chris Jones’ effort from a James Loveridge pass was saved.
Mattie Jones’ superb left wing cross then saw Ruane straight through, but home keeper Scott Coughlan pulled off a great save to deny the Aber goal-getter.
Ryan Wollacott, who was superb at the back for Aber, brought another save from Coughlan with his header, but Loveridge curled a shot narrowly wide for Llanelli.
Baynes went closer still at the other end with a cross shot, but when Jones’ corner kick reached Mendes at the back stick he headed home.
Ruane’s shot was deflected over for another corner, and Baynes’ cute delivery curled into the top corner for 2-0, and then four minutes later, Kellaway found the bottom corner with a superb strike.
The Reds replied on 57 minutes when Chris Jones crossed in for fellow ex-Seasider Clarke to head home, and as the game opened up and Jones just failed to find Loveridge with a cut back.
Aber, however, soon replied when Marc Williams cut the ball back for Kellaway to stab home a killer fourth goal, and although Joe Hunt’s free kick curled into the corner of Terry McCormick’s net for 4-2, there was no way back for the Reds.
Kellaway burst through down the left, but was denied a hat trick by Coughlan, but at the other end Ryan Wollacott cleared off the line with the hosts threatening.
With five minutes of injury time indicated sub Joe Dyer sent a great chance over for Llanelli, but the Seasiders held on for a priceless win.
