ABERYSTWYTH Town FC has now been given the green light to host their Dafabet Welsh Premier League against Bala Town on Friday night (7.45pm kick-off).
The Club was left facing a repair bill in excess of £30,000 after storms hit their Park Avenue ground last Thursday, with two floodlight pylons being destroyed by high winds that hit the town.
The damage led to the postponement of last Friday’s scheduled match against Cefn Druids, and chairman Tony Bates was left counting the cost of repair, and the loss of sponsorship and revenue.
It happened just days after remedial work to a set of lights at Park Avenue had forced the reversal of their scheduled home fixture against Bala the previous Friday.
The Seasiders have only recently returned to Park Avenue after playing their first 10 league games of the season on the road, whilst the new 3G pitch was installed.
Repairs to the damaged floodlights, which fell onto the pitch, are likely to take several weeks, but the Club has been working very hard to ensure their six remaining league and cup home matches can still be played at Park Avenue.
Newtown’s Latham Park had been provisionally booked for the Bala fixture, but the game can go ahead as scheduled this Friday, with temporary additional lights.
Both Clubs, however, were informed by the FAW that a further safety check will take place on Thursday to confirm the pitch is safe and suitable after the damage.
A spokesman for ATFC said: “Friday’s fixture had appeared in serious doubt after two of Park Avenue’s floodlight pylons were blown over just four days ago, but the Club has arranged to hire temporary additional lighting in order to ensure the game can be played at Aber Town’s spiritual home.
“We would like to thank our friends at the FAW for their help in ensuring the game can go ahead, and we are looking forward to welcoming a big crowd to the game in four days’ time, which until today had looked a near impossibility.”
Aber manager Matthew Bishop says he will be looking for a positive response from his team, after they followed up a 3-1 defeat to Gap Connah’s Quay with a 4-0 loss to third-placed Bala at Maes Tegid.
Defender Sam Rodon starts his suspension after his 92nd minute dismissal against the Lakesiders, but influential captain Luke Sherbon returns refreshed after his one game ban.Aber will be keen to raise their game in front of their home supporters, with ex-Seasiders Chris Venables, Stuart Jones and Conall Murtagh among the Bala ranks.
Aber’s inactivity saw them drop to ninth position, but they remain just two points adrift of sixth place, with a game in hand on their rivals.
First teamers Jack Rimmer, Luke Sherbon, Cledan Davies and Geoff Kellaway all joined Emyr Jones’ Under 19s side on Sunday in an 8-0 win over Haverfordwest County.
Kellaway scored four of the goals, with further strikes coming from Josh Abbott, with a brace, Harri Horwood and Tomos Evans. On Friday, a student promotion will see Aberystwyth University students admitted for just £2, and their admission will include a free hot dog in the clubhouse. University DIGS League teams are expected to be strongly represented on the night.
