ABERYSTWYTH Town boss Matthew Bishop is looking for his side to complete a festive double over mid Wales rivals Newtown when they travel to Latham Park on Saturday (ko 2.30pm).
Kurtis March’s 89th minute winner sealed a crucial home win on Boxing Day, to boost their hopes of making the top six at the Welsh Premier split.
Results elsewhere went Aber’s way on Boxing Day, with Carmarthen and Llandudno dropping points, meaning that the Seasiders will go sixth in the table if they win their game in hand.
As Carmarthen and Cardiff Met face each other on Saturday, seven points from the Black and Greens’ last three games would be enough to secure their place.
“It was a massive three points on Boxing Day," said manager Bishop.
"The boys are desperate to get into the top six, and it’s in our hands. If we get the results we want, then we’ll be in there.
“On the run of play, I felt we deserved the win on Boxing Day. We created a lot, got the ball into the box but haven’t got that finishing touch.
"It was a great move. Kostya (Georgievsky) did well down the left hand side. It’s was a great ball in to Kurtis March who’s done well to finish it off. I’m delighted with the three points.”
Aberystwyth were able to secure victory thanks in part to a solid defensive performance, which ensured their seventh clean sheet this season.
“Sam [Rodon] has come back in today, as has Ricky [Watts] after the sad death of his mother," said Bishop.
"We’ve done everything we can to support him through this difficult time and I thought he was exceptional today, as was Sam.
"The defensive unit looked like a rock today against a very good front line that Newtown have.”
With Carmarthen and Llandudno dropping points over the Boxing Day fixtures, Bishop’s men sit in a strong position with three fixtures left.
The Seasiders, however, expect another tough test as they bid to retain the Mid Wales bragging rights in Saturday’s reverse fixture at Newtown’s Latham Park.
“We’ve got another tough game next Saturday back at Newtown who will be trying to make sure we don’t do what we’ve done today," said Bishop.
"We’re back in training on Wednesday and it’s about making sure we pick up as many points as we can.”
Meanwhile a good week for Aber got even better yesterday as top scorer Like Borrelli signed an 18 month contract with the Club.
Borrelli signed from Haverfordwest County last June, along with three other ex-Bluebirds and assistant manager Wayne Jones.
He has played much of the season as Aber’s main striker, and his six Welsh Premier goals make him the joint top scorer at Aber so far this term, along with Geoff Kellaway.
