LEWIS Harling’s 79th minute header proved enough for lowly visitors Penybont to take all three points with a 1-0 over Aberystwyth Town at a rainswept Park Avenue on Friday evening.

In a marked contrast to last week’s five goal showing, Aber were restricted to few chances with Alhagi Touray Sisay going closest in the first half, and Marc Williams in the second half - but to no avail and Penybont walked off the field as well-deserved winners on the night.

Manager Matthew Bishop named an unchanged side their 5-3 win over Airbus, but it was clear early on that it was going to be a tougher assignment, with second-from-bottom Penybont seeing plenty of the ball and competing well.

Nathan Wood put in some dangerous crosses for the visitors, with Wes Baynes reciprocating for the Seasiders, but with both sides defending solidly, clear-cut chances were few and far between.

Alhagi Touray Sisay beat his man, before sending in a looping shot which deflected nicely for Ashley Morris in the Penybont goal, but Luke Boundford had to make a great tackle to deny Eli Phipps, and Harling curled wide for the Bont.

Williams was ruled offside just as he lobbed home for the hosts, and then Touray showed more trickery, before sending a volley just over the crossbar. At the other end, Mickey George fired wide, and Kane Owen lobbed over, and a fairly quiet first half ended goalless.

Aber made a double replacement after the break, as Matty Jones and Aaron Pomeyie came on as the rain came down. Owen again fired over, as did Wood from a good opening, and Aberystwyth in truth were finding it hard to get going.

Wood played in George with a great touch, only for the right back to drag his shot wide, and home keeper Alex Pennock gathered Owen’s curling effort.

Owen was then just inches away from scoring, pulling a brilliant free kick narrowly wide, and Owain Warlow then fired over from another great position, with the visitors looking threatening.

Williams picked the ball up 30 yards out, and bore in on goal to send a volley zooming just past the post - and Jones’ cross was just cleared off Williams’ head.

Then, with just over 10 minutes remaining, a left wing cross found Harling in the box, and his deft header back into the corner of the net put Penybont ahead.

Despite their efforts, Aber could not fashion an equaliser, and after a great effort the week before, they will now need a response at Cefn Druids on 6 March.
