ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Matthew Bishop was pleased to see his side start their new JD Cymru Premier campaign with a home win against Carmarthen Town on Friday, writes Adam Hughes.

After scoring twice in the 4-3 win at Cambrian and Clydach in the Nathaniel Cup, Marc Williams took his tally to four goals in two matches as the Seasiders hit back to beat their west Wales rivals 3-2 in their league opener.

It was a satisfying result for the Aber boss, who will be looking for his side to build on back-to-back wins away at Barry Town this Friday, before hosting The New Saints on Monday (ko 2.30pm).

“The players have done what we asked them to do, and they have got the three points for us,” said Bishop.

“We didn’t start particularly well, I thought that we were quite sloppy in the first 30 minutes, and we looked a bit rusty, like in the first game of the season for us.

“We settled down in the last 15 minutes of the first half, and obviously the goal really changed it for us.”

After falling behind to an early penalty, the Seasiders took control either side of the interval, with Williams netting his brace, before a stunning strike by new signing Luke Boundford sealed it.

Bishop added: “The front men were exceptional for us, both of them got off the mark in the league, just as they had done last week in the Cup.

“They continued that, and worked tirelessly throughout the game, and that’s what you want from your strikers, not only putting the ball in the back of the net, but also doing the other stuff.”

Assistant manager Gavin Allen admitted there was still room for improvement, with two tricky league fixtures to come away at Barry on Friday, and The New Saints at Park Avenue on Monday.

“It was very important to come away with the three points, and obviously the next couple of games will be a tough challenge,” he said.

“I always thought we had enough to win, and finally we got the three points, but the first 25 minutes were the worst I’ve seen for a while.

“The atmosphere was quiet and the team were quiet, but gradually you could see that we were getting on top, and again we showed good character to come back and get the win we had asked for.”

Aber’s potent strike force, which has already notched seven goals in two games, is boosted by the return of Rio Ahmadi from a two goal suspensio.

Goalkeeper Terry McCormick retired after last weekend’s match, but Aberystwyth have moved quickly to find cover with the signing of Connor Roberts on a season-long loan from parent club The New Saints.
