ABERYSTWYTH Town are preparing for one last push for a top six place in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League when they take on mid Wales rivals Newtown in the live televised match at Park Avenue on Saturday (ko 5.15pm).
The Seasiders, who are currently eighth in the table, after successive home defeats against Carmarthen, Haverfordwest and Port Talbot, now need to win by two clear goals to climb above the Robins on goal difference.
They must also hope that seventh-placed Carmarthen Town fail to beat Rhyl - and get a better result than Bangor City against Haverfordwest - but the Seasiders are determined to give it their best shot.
"If we beat Newtown, we go level on points with them, and then it’s down to goal difference," said Hughes.
"It will be difficult but we won’t stop until it’s completely out of our hands."
"We created enough chances to win any game against Port Talbot, but if we give goals away like we that, we’ll lose more than we win. We are creating the chances, but we need to stop conceding silly goals."
A breakaway injury time goal ensured a flattering 3-1 win for Port Talbot at Park Avenue last Sunday, but defensive mistakes and a failure to make their pressure count left Aber’s hopes of qualifying for the top six hanging by a thread.
The Seasiders, who have seen loan striker Jamie Reed return to The New Saints after scoring seven goals in 17 starts, have strengthened by signing midfielder Jonathan Evans from Spar Mid Wales League division one neighbours Penrhyncoch.
Evans went straight into the starting line-up last weekend, along with the returning Rhys Griffiths, but Ross Stephens was ruled out with a hamstring problem, and he may be unavailable again against his former club.Manager Ian Hughes will be unavailable for Saturday's match against Newtown due to a routine medical operation, so assistant manager Wyn Thomas and first team coach Antonio Corbisiero will take charge for the immediate future.Meanwhile Newtown, who drew 0-0 with Aber at Latham Park earlier this season, will be looking to repeat their 2-1 Play-Off final success of last May, when goals from Tom Goodwin and Matty Hearsey secured their place in the Europa League.
Newtown boss Chris Hughes, however, admitted that his squad had been stretched to its limit by injuries, having watched his side succumb to a 3-0 defeat to Bangor City last Friday.
"It is a massive game for us, and we have done really well in big games such as this before," he said.
"It goes without saying we will be going there looking for the three points, and it’s an old saying if football, that we will just be looking after ourselves.
"If we win, we have done it, if we draw we are still in a strong position, and if we lose then we look at other results. Aber are still in with a shot of the top six as well, so the game is wide open."
Newtown have signed 32 year-old former Shrewsbury Town and Wrexham midfielder Jamie Tolley this week, but still have injury doubts ahead of the big game.Sean Evans and Kieran Mill-Evans are both major doubts, and Dave Jones, Luke Boundford and Gavin Cadwallader face late fitness tests.Kick off for the big match is at 5.15pm, and admission costs £6 for adults, £4 concessions and £1 for school children.
