Aberystwyth Town notched a good away point in a 2-2 draw at Cefn Druids, to reduce the gap to Play Off Conference leaders Cardiff Met to eight points.
Cody Ruberto struck first for the hosts in the 12th minute, but Marc Williams equalised almost immediately and Matty Jones’ 61st minute strike - scoring from the rebound after his penalty was saved - had Aber dreaming of claiming the win.
Ruberto headed an equaliser for Druids with 20 minutes to go, however, and although both sides had chances to win it, a draw was the fairest result by the end.
On a crisp evening, Williams nearly played in Alhagi Touray Sisay for Aber in the opening minutes, but then Charley Edge sent a snapshot past the post for Cefn, and it was clear this would not be an easy game for the Black and Greens.
Ruberto then burst through, but his low effort was saved at the second attempt by Aberystwyth keeper Alex Pennock, and the impressive Ilan Hughes sent a sighter over the crossbar for the visiting team.
It was the hosts who made the breakthrough when Ruberto ran through again, and this time he slipped the ball under Pennock to open the scoring.
Within a minute, however, a simple long ball saw home keeper Jones and Williams challenge for the ball, and Aber’s captain slotted home the equaliser.
Pennock then gathered a good ball in from Edge, and the solid Luke Boundford made a good block, before Iwan Cartwright’s shot deflected to Pennock.
A scrappy period ensued, with Aber defending well yet struggling to create too many openings, and Lee Jenkins did well to block Jamie Reed with a strong tackle.
In the visitors’ goal, Pennock punched a goalbound effort clear under pressure from Reed, and he made further decent stops to deny Edge and Eugene Faux.
Aber threatened with crosses from Paulo Mendes and Wes Baynes, but on the balance of play the visitors were probably the happier to hear the half-time whistle.
With the temperature dropping in the second half, Aber started to create chances and Williams sent in a dangerous cross but a last-ditch tackle denied Touray.
With Aber’s Spanish striker starting to show his tricks, the visitors were improving, and just past the hour Williams won the ball and set up Touray, who rounded Jones - only to be felled by the home keeper, who escaped with a yellow card.
Mike Jones did well to parry Mathew Jones’ penalty, but Aber’s homegrown star was quickest to tap home the rebound and put the visitors in front.
Half an hour was a long time to hold on, and Boundford blocked Reed’s effort, before Reed saw another attempt cleared off the line, with the home side pressing.
They levelled matters the 70th minute when a right wing cross found Ruberto, who headed in the equaliser - and now Cefn looked the more likely winners.
Pennock denied Reed, and then made another great save from a point blank header to keep Aber in it - but towards the end the visitors came back into it.
Sub James Rowland set up Touray with a great cross, but his volley flew over the bar, and he headed over from close range minutes later from an offside position.
Williams again sent in a dangerous cross, but Phil Mooney deflected it safely back to Jones. Touray had a shot saved and Jones fired over in injury time, but as the final whistle went the 2-2 scoreline was an accurate reflection of the play.
Aber deserve credit for some solid defending and will take confidence from a two goal haul away from home as they look forward to Friday’s Cymru Premier match at home to Carmarthen (7.45pm).
