A PENALTY shoot-out saw Aberystwyth University seal their place in the second round the Central Wales Challenge Cup with a thrilling win at Bishop’s Castle.

After securing their first Spar Mid Wales League division two victory of the season against Dyffryn Banw the week before, the Aberystwyth students had made the trek into Shropshire in very good spirits.

They were ahead through Liam Powell’s strike, but two headed goals saw Castle carve a 2-1 lead at the interval - before Sean Roberts levelled in the second half to take the first round tie into extra time.

Powell then got his second of the game with a stunning 30-yard volley in the first period of extra time, but a third headed goal saw Castle set up a penalty decider.

Two goals by Martyn Ziemann and one for Sam Naden had ensured that Bishops Castle took the encounter to a shoot-out.

The students held their nerve in the penalty drama to prevail 3-1, with Tristan Harris, Alistair Palmer and Chris Warden all converting from the spot, while keeper Filip Liczyk also made two crucial saves.

A youthful Cilgerran went out at the first hurdle against Newbridge-on-Wye, but they made the Spar Mid Wales division two side work hard for their 2-0 win.

Aeron Powell opened the scoring, and the same player completed his brace midway through the second half when he slotted a penalty, after he had been brought down in the box by Mathew Williams.

Cilgerran skipper Dai Williams led by example as his team pushed hard for a goal, with Joe Hills missing a great chance.

Louis Harding also saw a very good effort bounce back off the woodwork, but Cilgerran’s youngsters were edged out.

Lampeter Town pulled out of their tie away at Kerry as they were unable to raise a team, whilst at New Quay the Seasiders lost 7-0 against Welshpool side Waterloo.

Chris Hughes and Andy Gwilt both netted twice, whilst Luke Evans, Nathan James and Nick Roberts also scored.

Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League side Llanilar bowed out of the competition with a 3-2 defeat at Montgomeryshire League outfit Trewern, after leading by two clear goals through Ryan Edwards and a penalty by Clive Morgan.

The Tigers fought back with two goals from Neal Bebb and a Charlie Proctor penalty to secure their place in round two.

Elsewhere Sam Roberts scored a late winner as Llanymynech beat rivals Four Crosses 1-0, whilst Joshua Price scored all four goals as Builth beat Penybont 4-2.

Churchstoke beat Llangedwyn 4-0 and Brecon Northcote lost 2-1 to Llanfyllin.

• In the Costcutter Ceredigion League Cup, St Dogmaels chalked up a remarkable win as they fired 25 goals past SDUC.
