ASSISTANT manager Gavin Allen has warned that Aberystwyth Town’s priority is to secure their Welsh Premier League status this season.

Geoff Kellaway’s strike earned them a battling 1-1 draw against bottom club Llandudno at Park Avenue last Friday evening, to end a miserable run of seven successive defeats in all competitions.

The welcome point keeps them 12 points clear of second-from-bottom Llanelli, who they travel to face on Friday, and assistant boss Allen is looking for his side to take another step towards safety.

“Confidence has been low, you could see it in the team last week, but if we can take points off teams like Llandudno and Llanelli, it’s going to be very tough for them to catch us,” commented Allen.

“I know that the expectations are to get into the play-offs, but the biggest thing for us first is to stay up in this league.”

The Seasiders, who gave debuts to new signings Marc Williams and Carwyn Jones on Friday, found themselves trailing to George Harry’s 17th minute deflected shot, but Kellaway’s 73rd minute strike earned them a deserved point.

The draw means that the Seasiders are just two points adrift of seventh-placed Cardiff Met in the race for a play-off position, but Allen has admitted that his side will be taking each game as it comes.

“It’s good to see that we are getting into key areas to have a shot, even if we were missing a bit of tempo today,” said Allen. “Llandudno are bottom of the league, but we did not have any false expectations about getting the win. They fought for everything, and all the best to them."We’ve taken a point from the game, but there’s still a lot of work to be done on the training pitch, to be honest. We need our confidence back. When we were on our winning run, we were bouncing, but we have been very low.”

With nine league games to go, Aber travel to face a Llanelli side that they have already beaten twice this season. The Reds are six points adrift of third-from-bottom Cefn Druids after a goalless draw between the two sides last week.

“We went to Llanelli and beat them 3-1 earlier in the season, but they have also made some good signings,” said Allen.

“After losing seven games on the bounce there is no point in us looking to the next five games, we’ll go game by game. We’ll train on Tuesday and work hard, and we’ll then roll into Friday night’s match down there with a game plan.”Llanelli received a major blow to their survival hopes this week with the news of Swansea City legend Leon Britton's season-ending injury.Meanwhile the Reds' squad has a number of former Seasiders, including Joe Clarke, Kurtis March and Chris Jones.
