BOW STREET made a winning start to their new Spar Mid Wales League division one campaign as last-gasp goals by Mathew Evans and Tom Williams sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory in front of a sizeable crowd at Berriew last weekend.

After narrowly losing out to Rhayader Town in last season’s race for the title, Berriew had been looking to maintain an exceptional record at home.

Street, who have retained all of last year’s squad, introduced new players to their team in Llyr Hughes, Josh Ferreira and Ben Jones, and looked bright from the start.

The first half was goalless, but very exciting as both teams created chances, and Ben Willis produced a superb save to deny the hosts.

The home goalkeeper then needed to produce a miraculous save with his legs to deny Street’s Llion Jenkins.

Willis produced another great save at the start of the second half, but soon after came the first goal when Karl Seliaerts found the home net from a free kick.

Seliaerts, who played for Bow Street back in 2011, was a constant threat to the visitors, and the Magpies did well for 20 minutes or so after the goal to stem the tide and stay in the game.

With six minutes to go, however, after a period of pressure by the Magpies, they levelled matters when the ball broke to Mathew Evans, who finished well.

Then, with just two minutes remaining, Bow Street snatched the three points.

Pressure down the left hand side produced an opening for skipper Tomos Williams, who rounded the keeper to score the winner.

This resulted in delirious scenes amongst the large contingent of away supporters - which were repeated a few minutes later when the referee blew for full time.

“It was a quality performance by the whole squad, against top quality opposition,” said delighted Bow Street chairman Wyn Lewis.

“Berriew are quite rightly the favourites for the league this season, but this performance and well-deserved result proves we can compete with the top teams.

“We have to maintain this level now as we face a very busy schedule of four games in 14 days during August.”

Bow Street were due to travel to newly-promoted Borth United on Tuesday, before hosting Radnor Valley on Saturday (2.30pm).
