ABERYSTWYTH University Reserves moved one point clear at the top of the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth District League division one as they strolled to an 8-1 win over Llanilar on Saturday.
After an action-packed week, the students have played two games more than rivals Dolgellau, who they play in the last game of the season on 28 May.
There were goals aplenty against Llanilar, with Shaun Roberts notching four, Owain Morris scoring a brace, and Tristan Harris and Owen Whitmore also getting onto the scoresheet.
The result atoned for a 4-3 defeat at Borth United Reserves on Thursday.
Ben Byrne had given the hosts the lead, only for Josh Orton to equalise, but two second half goals from Ryan Davies put the home team in charge.
Henry Nicholson reduced the arrears with a neat finish, but Ben Byrne restored the two-goal advantage, before a low drive from Gytis Pivnickas made it a nervous last few minutes for Borth.
On Tuesday, the students had closed in on the leaders with a 4-1 win at Talybont - breaking their opposition down with three goals in the last 20 minutes.
Shaun Roberts converted a penalty, whilst two goals by Owen Whitmore and one by Owain Morris sealed the points for the students, after Robbie Southgate had netted for Talybont.
Dolgellau had showed no signs of slipping up in the title race as a hat-trick from Dominic Thomas, and singles from Ryan Thomas, Darryl Johns and David Edwards sealed a 6-1 win at Penrhyncoch Reserves last Tuesday, with John Warwick heading the reply.
Goals from Peter Wilson and Paul Griffiths meanwhile earned Padarn a 2-1 midweek success over Llanilar.
Machynlleth Reserves beat local rivals Aberdyfi 6-0, courtesy of a hat-trick from Tom Evans, a Joseph Bell brace and a single fom Alex Jarman.
Last weekend a hat-trick from Ben Byrne and one each from Ryan Davies and Steve Bailey earned Borth Reserves a 5-0 win against Tregaron.
Gytis Pivnickas netted an injury-time winner as Aberystwyth University Thirds won 3-2 at Talybont Reserves.
Goals by Pivnickas and a Chris Warden free-kick were cancelled out by goals from Mike Fitzpatrick and Jamie Morgan, but Pivnickas scored his 16th of the season to snatch a last-gasp win.
On Monday, the University Thirds had laboured to a 7-3 win at basement side Llanon, with Nathan Ash and Matty Hunton netting hat-tricks, with David Esser also on the scoresheet.
Dolgellau faced Borth United Reserves in final of the Len and Julia Newman Memorial Trophy in Bow Street last night (Wednesday) after goals from Dominic Thomas and Joe Ephraim earned them a 2-0 semi-final win over Padarn United last weekend.
• Llanrhystud will take on Talybont Reserves in the Second Division Trophy at Bow Street’s Cae Piod on Thursday night, following their 5-1 semi-final win over Llanilar Reserves.
Talybont reached the final with a 4-0 win over Dolgellau Reserves, with goals from Joel Dixon, Jamie Morgan, Mike Firzpatrick and Bradley Dowse.
