ABERYSTWYTH University kept alive their promotion prospects in the Spar Mid Wales League division two with a terrific 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Llansantffraid Village.
In an often scrappy affair in heavy conditions, the third-placed students battled hard to pick up a crucial victory, to move to within three points of their second-placed visitors.
Liam Powell went close in the first half when putting an effort over, but the breakthrough came midway through the second period when James Watts cut in from the left, before slotting into the net.
Llansantffraid applied some late pressure, but they could find no way through a solid defence, with keeper Tom Goodman making some good saves in goal.
Hay St Mary’s meanwhile continued their recent good league form as they notched a 3-0 win over Dyffryn Banw, to move up into fourth position in division two.
All the goals were scored in the first half, with striker Tom Landon opening the scoring for the Saints, before an own goal then made it 2-0 to the home team.
Jack Biggs soon added a third goal to send the Saints in 3-0 up at the break.
In difficult playing conditions there were no more goals in the second period, but the Saints held firm, with four 16 year-olds in the squad, including Griff Thomas, who was voted man of the match.
Montgomery Town’s match with Dolgellau, Newbridge-on-Wye’s fixture with Abermule, and Presteigne’s match with Talgarth Town were all postponed..
