ABERYSTWYTH University ended their campaign on a winning note with a 4-3 win at Borth United in their final game of the season in the Spar Mid Wales League division two on Sunday.

They finished six points clear in second spot, but both Radnor Valley and Kerry had enough games in hand to overtake the Aberystwyth students in their remaining matches this week.

The University were unlucky to hit the post and the crossbar in one slick move, before they took the lead when a cross from the left wing allowed Tom Spicer to glance a header passed Ben Willis on the half hour.

They doubled their lead when Borth lost the ball in midfield and the prolific Rian Devlin ran through and slotted home for 2-0.

Borth replied when Ryan Davies toe-poked the ball passed keeper Alex Westbury, and in the second half, some excellent play between Jamie Evans and Ryan Davies saw Davies stroke the ball home into an empty net.

Within two minutes the students were back in front when Tom Spicer scored his second goal with a low shot, but Borth equalised then again as Jamie Evans’ low strike evaded the keeper.

The game still had one last twist as Borth conceded a free kick outside the penalty area and Mathew Hunton, on his last first team appearance, squeezed his low shot passed Willis for the winner.

Six days earlier, the students had beaten Borth 2-1 at Uppingham Fields with two goals from Shaun Roberts, after Justin Quinn had levelled before the interval.

The students’ hectic run-in continued on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw with Bont, where Rian Devlin’s goal earned the students a point.

Trevor Jenkins scored for Bont, who have confirmed that they will be seeking relegation into the Cambrian Tyres League next season.

The Uni then lost 3-1 at Newbridge last Saturday, where they conceded two goals from Ollie Woods and a Greg Lawrence goal, before Niall Jones scored late on from the penalty spot.

On Saturday, Borth had lost 1-0 at home to Dyffryn Banw, who had taken the lead after only 10 minutes when Tom Foulkes outsmarted the Borth defence and chipped the ball over Ben Willis for the only goal.

Bont lost 5-0 to Radnor Valley last weekend, with two goals each from Joey Price and Jack Price, and a Callum Matthews effort.

Champions Berriew made it two wins in a week as a Josh Gethin hat-trick and a Chris Carroll goal earned them a 4-0 win at Penybont.

In midweek, goals by Rob Pritchard and Rich Davies, with a brace, had earned Berriew a 3-2 win at Kerry, where Luke Mumford scored twice for the hosts.
