ABERYSTWYTH University have finally registered their first point of the season in the MMP Mid Wales League division two - with an action-packed 3-3 draw under the new floodlights at Machynlleth.

Goals from Balázs Gombkoto, Luke Thomas and Jamie Stuart, all headers from set pieces, earned the Aber students their share of the spoils on a difficult playing surface on Tuesday night.

The visitors also missed four or five clear-cut chances to have come away with the points, but in the end goals from Alex Davies, with a brace, and Benj Davies earned the hosts a point.

The losing run had continued for Aberystwyth University last weekend with a 5-3 home loss to Rhayader Town - their ninth successive league defeat.

The students were unfortunate to be left with nothing to show for their determined efforts, after clawing back from a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2, with some of their best football of the season.

Rhayader produced some terrific finishes from distance to ultimately run out winners, with their goal-scorers being Jamie Evans, who netted a brace, Mike Fowlie, Joe Wozencraft and Mark Davies.

The students fought back onto level terms before the half-time interval, with a Calum Simons cross being headed into his own net by Dan Goodman, before a mistake by the Rhayader keeper handed the ball to a grateful Liam Powell, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

A promising start to the second half saw the Uni take the lead at 3-2 when the ball was worked out to the left, and Liam Powell crossed for Jamie Stuart to head into the back of the net on 52 minutes.

Rhayader, however, showed plenty of character as they turned the tables again with two efforts from outside the box to snatch a first win away from home.Four Crosses took the spoils in dreadful playing conditions as goals from Josh Thomas and the in-from Jamie Evans, with a brace, sealed a 3-1 win over Dolgellau, with David Edwards replying.

With Hay St Mary’s match against third-placed Waterloo Rovers being postponed, Montgomery took their chance to move level on points with the leaders with a 5-0 home win over Presteigne. Tom Evans and Robbie Hartshaw both netted twice, with Jack Williams also scoring.

Borth United’s match at Abermule, and Machynlleth’s home fixture with Newbridge-on-Wye were both postponed last weekend.
