TOP level football for Aberystwyth Town men and women is set to return, the Football Association of Wales has announced, after the leagues had their elite status reinstated today (Tuesday).
The Football Association of Wales had previously said that football would resume when Wales dropped to coronavirus alert level 3, or when elite status was handed back to the leagues, whichever came first.
With the leagues now having that status returned on 23 February by the National Sports Group – set up in November to manage the return of sport in Wales - games are on track to be played from the beginning of next month.
The two divisions below the JD Cymru Premier - the JD Cymru North and JD Cymru South - have not had their elite status reinstated as yet, so the wait at that level continues.
The FA Wales had previously released a plan to resume the JD Cymru Premier fixtures on 5 March, completing the season by 31 May.
The Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League is slated to begin on 5 March and complete its season on 23 March.
FA Wales said that “confirmation of the rescheduled fixtures for the JD Cymru Premier and the Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League will be announced in due course.”
When football returns both Aberystwyth Town teams face relegation battles with each bottom of their respective leagues when games were stopped amid the pandemic.
Bala Town are sitting third in the top league, eyeing European qualification.
