TREGARON Turfs’ hopes of reaching the Emrys Morgan Cup semi-finals ended with a 2-1 extra-time defeat against a Four Crosses side that showed real potential to go on and win the silverware. The Turfs had forced an additional half an hour when Mel Davies fired home, to cancel out a first half strike from Ben Simms - but it was Simms who had the final say with a stunning strike in the first period of extra-time to book Crosses' place in the last four of the competition.Under grey skies, the pitch, although heavy, held up enough for an excellent cup tie, with some crunching tackles from the outset.Crosses, flying high in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League, worked hard to create chances, with Kyle Wilson firing wide from the edge of box, and Ben Simms twisting his way into a shooting position, before firing into the side-netting.
Tregaron battled hard and were always in contention, with a well hit free kick narrowly sailing over as both sides tried to find rhythm.
At the other end, the lively Simms also saw a tight angled shot hit the side-netting, and Jack Jones burst down the right, cut in, and forced a superb save.
Crosses, however, made the breakthrough when Kyle Wilson smashed an excellent free kick 30 yards, which the keeper could only parry, and Simms reacted to convert from close range.
Tregaron began the second half brightly and a great move, involving four players, finally led to a fine diving save by Dan Wood. The Turfs were still very much up for the challenge.
They were back on level terms when Mel Davies found space to pull the trigger on the edge of the 18 yard box, and his fine strike through a packed box found its way low into the bottom corner of the net.
Crosses responded positively, with Shin Miah’s high delivery beating the keeper and hitting the far post, but Tregaron looked a threat on the counter-attack.
Jack Jones, Kyle Wilson and Ben Simms all had difficult chances to score for Crosses, but Tregaron’s solid defence still held firm.
Extra time was needed to separate the sides, but the visitors’ break-through came straight from kick-off.
Kyle Wilson’s pass found Ben Simms, who skipped beyond one challenge onto his left boot and let rip from 25 yards out from an angle, with his thunderous strike finding the top corner.
Tregaron hit back well and keeper Wood pulled off a fantastic reaction point blank save from six yards.
Crosses’ Paul Bache and Kyle Wilson, however, were now totally dominating the midfield, anchored by a brilliant Joe Clarke display.
Tired legs in the final half of extra time led to a number of snatched chances just missing the target.
Jack Jones came closest to extending the lead, skimming one off the bar after he battled hard to win the ball as Crosses marched onwards to the semi-finals.
Forden United meanwhile beat Mid Wales League (South) side Newcastle 3-1 to reach the semi-finals of the competition. The Montgomeryshire Amateur League side had opened up a three-goal interval lead through Kieran Evans, Darryl Jones and Mike Henderson-Smith.Calum Evans reduced the deficit with a penalty midway through the second half for the Shropshire side, but Forden held firm for their place in the last four. The other two quarter final ties between Newcastle Emlyn and Ffostrasol and Lampeter Town and Felinfach were both postponed..
