TREGARON Turfs are through to the semi-finals of the Emrys Morgan Cup after they notched a solid 3-1 win over Costcutter Ceredigion League side Lampeter in their rearranged tie last weekend.
Goals from Daniel Owen, Cledan Davies and man of the match Rhun Garner fired the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League leaders through, as they look to emulate their Cup success in 2007.
After their disappointing 3-2 defeat to Cardigan Town in the Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies Cup a fortnight ago, Tregaron showed their bounce back ability with a dominating display against Lampeter.
Playing against the strong wind in the first half, Tregaron were 2-1 up at the half-time interval, following 20 minutes of cut and thrust football from both sides.
The Turfs opened the scoring from a corner, with Daniel Owen tapping home from close range, but Lampeter soon replied as poor communication let in Liam Jones to fire home into the far corner.
Cledan Davies put Turfs back in front 10 minutes before half-time when a neat move involving half a dozen players saw the former Aberystwyth Town player smash in with a superb left-footed shot.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, the Turfs then went further ahead when the impressive Rhun Garner found the back of the net with a terrific solo run and finish from 20 yards out.
The last 20 minutes of the game saw the Turfs launch several promising attacks, to leave the dogged Lampeter defence holding on to keep the scoreline respectable.
Meanwhile the twice-postponed Emrys Morgan Cup quarter-final ties involving Dewi Stars and Cardigan Town, and Felinfach and Newcastle Emlyn, have both been rearranged for this Saturday, with early inspections if required - and the venues may be switched on the day.
The all-Powys quarter-final between Guilsfield Reserves and Brecon Corries has also been rearranged for Saturday.
Meanwhile the draw for the Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies Memorial Cup semi-finals have been made, with Lampeter Town scheduled to take on Crannog, whilst St Dogmaels are paired with Cardigan.
Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League
PENPARCAU Reserves held on to pole position in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League division two as they battled out a 2-2 draw with their title rivals Dolgellau Reserves.
Mikey Gornall and Ben Holt netted for the hosts, but goals by Jamie Jones and Charlie Owen ensured that Dolgellau returned with a point, to remain level on points with Penparcau’s seconds, with a game in hand.
For the second weekend running, the wet weather decimated the local fixtures, including Llanilar’s division one match against Bont, and Corris United’s scheduled Second Division Trophy match with Padarn Reserves.
Weather permitting, division one action resumes this weekend, with leaders Tregaron Turfs scheduled to host Talybont, whilst Aberystwyth University Reserves entertain Bont, and Llanilar welcome Padarn United.
Tregaron are currently one point clear of Llanilar at the top of the table, but the Turfs have two games in hand, and a perfect unbeaten record.
In division two, Padarn Reserves host Aberystwyth University Thirds, and Penparcau Reserves are due to face Llanilar Reserves in the Second Division Trophy.
Meanwhile in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League South, Brecon Corinthians notched a 2-1 win at home to Rhayader Town Reserves.
Goals from Luke Roughley and Paul Keddle gave the Corries the lead, before Tommy Rowlands hit back with a reply goal for the Red Kites.
• Aberystwyth Town Ladies are through to the semi-finals of the Central Wales Women’s Cup after goals from Alaw Davies, with a brace, Catrin Evans, Tania Wylde, Nia Witts and an own goal secured a 6-0 win over Aberystwyth University.
