ABERYSTWYTH Town have announced the signings of Declan Walker and Declan Carroll, to bolster Neville Powell’s squad ahead of their forthcoming Welsh Premier League campaign.
Joining up again with his former boss at Bangor City is Warrington-born defender Declan Walker, 25, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-19 level, after being handed a pro contract by Wrexham in July 2010.
Walker made 21 appearances for the Racecourse outfit in the Blue Square Premier in 2012/13, but was released and signed for Bangor in July 2013, spending three seasons at Nantporth.
He was named in the Welsh Premier League team of the season in 2013/14, but injury curtailed his time with the Citizens in July 2016, after scoring two goals from 61 Welsh Premier appearances.
Declan Carroll, 24, meanwhile returns to the Seasiders for a second spell at Park Avenue.
He started his career with Tenby and then spent the second half of season 2011/12 with Haverfordwest County before joining Aberystwyth in July 2012.
Carroll returned to the Bluebirds in September 2013, leaving to join neighbours Carmarthen after County were relegated in the summer of 2016. He has scored 10 goals from 85 (+24) WPL appearances.
The Seasiders will look to carry the positive momentum gained in last week’s 4-1 friendly win over Haverfordwest County forward into this weekend’s double header in South Wales.
First up on Friday night is Ynysygerwyn FC, who were promoted to Welsh League division three last summer, and went on to finish mid table.
The Neath Valley side are managed by David Burrows, who played for Town in the Inter Toto Cup in 2004, before going on to manage the side in the Welsh Premier League.
Then on Saturday afternoon Aber visit Briton Ferry Athletic, who like previous opponents Llanelli were promoted back into Welsh League division one last season.
Ray Pennock, brother of brief Aber manager Tony Pennock, is assistant manager at Old Road and local boy Steve Cann, who kept goal for Aber for a number of seasons, as well as Carmarthen and Port Talbot Town, now plays for his hometown club.
The Aber squad will be staying in Swansea between the two games, and the weekend will give the players the opportunity to bond and create team spirit, which manager Neville Powell has identified as a must.
