ABERYSTWYTH University stayed on course for some end of season silverware after storming into the final of the Spar Mid Wales League’s ER Jenkins Division Two Cup with a 5-2 victory at Dolgellau.
Goals from Liam Powell and Tristan Harris ensured that it was 2-2 at half time, before a second brace from Henry Nicholson and Ali Palmer’s goal book their ticket to face Borth or Churchstoke in the final.
Dolgellau had seen key defender Dafydd Meirion pull out on the morning of the game, and the students began brightly.
Chris Warden fired inches over after a corner had been half cleared, but Dolgellau responded, with Dominic Thomas crossing for Joe Ephraim to fire just over.
They made the breakthrough on a quarter of an hour when Tom Carr played the ball through to Dion Jones to slot home.
A minute later, David Edwards set up Dominic Thomas, but his effort was deflected onto the bar, but the students stepped up to equalise on the half hour.
From a quick throw-in, Nicholson squared the ball across the penalty box for Liam Powell to slot home at the far post.
Six minutes later Dolgellau were in front as Nicholson crossed for Tristan Harris, who slotted home from just six yards out.
On the stroke of half time, however, Darren Andrews’ clearance was headed on by Dominic Thomas into the path of Joe Ephraim, and he raced clear to round the keeper and side-foot the equaliser.
Dolgellau started the second half brightly, with Edwards’ cross from the left missing Thomas by just inches, and then a minute later a long kick by Andrews went over the away defence, with Thomas striking his volley just over the target.
From the very next move, however, a long throw from the left saw the ball bounce just three yards out, and with his back to goal Nicholson headed it home.
Palmer had an effort saved by keeper Andrews and Powell fired just wide as the University began to take charge.
Then, on the hour, Palmer saw his effort saved, but he scored at his second attempt to put the students in the driving seat.
It got worse still for Dolgellau two minutes later when, following a cross from the left, Andrews saved from Palmer, but Nicholson blasted home the rebound.
Dolgellau battled back in the last 20 minutes and Jasper Jones crossed for Thomas, but his header was comfortably saved.
Thomas saw his cross from the left hit the crossbar, and he also forced a save, but the students, who had beaten leaders Kerry on penalties in the previous round, held firm to book their place in the final.
