PORTHMADOG manager Craig Papirnyk has strengthened his squad for the new Cymru Alliance campaign with the addition of two attacking midfielders.

Warren Duckett has joined from Denbigh Town and Shaun Cavanagh has joined from Caernarfon Town, and the Porthmadnog boss is hopeful that both players will prove to be good signings.

"I’m delighted that we’ve secured signatures for both players for the coming season," said the Porthmadog boss.

“I’m made up about finally getting Warren to Port. I’ve been after him for a years.

"Waz (Duckett) has trained with us and played a couple of games so far, and as well as scoring, he has had a very positive impact on the squad already.

“He’s a player I played with at Bala, and one I respected very highly, he’s a born winner and natural leader.

"His experience will undoubtedly strengthen us, and he has the ability to score goals from midfield.

"He’s excellent at link-up play, and can score with both feet and his head, he’s very respected at this level.

"He is a top signing for us with plenty of football still left in him, and will bring experience and leadership to this young squad we have."

Papirnyk added: "I am also very excited about signing Shaun Cavanagh this evening. Cav is undoubtedly one of the best youngsters around.

"He is versatile and can play with both feet, he has sharp movement and loves to get on the ball to make things happen. Like Warren, he has also been training with us, he has played a couple of games and has settled straight in.

“I am now looking forward to bringing this squad closer together in the coming weeks, training has been good up to this point. The lads are looking fit and strong and we are all itching now for the season to start."

Porthmadog continued their encouraging pre-season with a 4-1 friendly win against Llandyrnog United on the 4G pitch at Bala’s Maes Tegid last Tuesday.

Craig Papirnyk’s went ahead on 21 minutes when Julian Williams found the net with a shot from 20 yards, but Luke Appleby levelled the scores for Llandyrnog.

With half-time approaching, Porth got themselves back on front when a Sion Edwards corner found Warren Duckett, who applied the finish touch to go 2-1 ahead.

There was no addition to the score until the 63rd minute when summer signing from Brickfield Rangers, Dale Davies, met a Gruff John cross to make it 3-1 to Port.

It became 4-1 on 83 minutes when Rob Evans netted, and that is how it ended with players having a good work-out.

Porthmadog followed that up with a 6-1 win over Llanuwchllyn, with Sion Edwards leading the way in the second half.

Llanuwchllyn held the Cymru Alliance side in a goalless first half, but on 57 minuets Edwards put them ahead, before Iddon Price doubled the advantage on 68.

The floodgates opened with four further goals in the space of eight minutes. Jake Jones netted Porth’s third on 70 minutes and Edwards got back in the act to score twice more on 73 and 76 minutes, before an own goal completed the scoring.

• This Saturday, 21 July, will be an afternoon of celebration at the Traeth as a large squad of former Porthmadog heroes has been assembled to pay tribute to Richard Harvey’s outstanding career, a career which reached its final act last season.

The squad reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the last 25 years at the Traeth, and is a sign of the affection and the respect which fellow players have for the popular keeper.

The game between the current Port team and the Legends will kick off at 2.30 pm.

From 7.30pm, the band ‘Declan Swans’ will lead the evening’s entertainment.
