ABERYSTWYTH Town Under-19s manager Bari Morgan praised his players on a great performance after the young Seasiders moved to the top of the Welsh Premier Development League (South).
Goals from Liam Doherty, Harri Cottham and Osian Rees-Jones sealed a 3-0 win at Penybont, to move them two points clear of Swansea City at the summit.
The Seasiders made the long journey south with the aim of continuing their good form of recent weeks, and the first quarter of the game proved to be a scrappy affair, as both teams seemed to cancel each other out in a physical affair.
Aber broke the deadlock through Liam Doherty, who made a lovely run in behind the Penybont defence and clinically finished into the bottom corner, taking his superb tally to 27 goals for the season.
The Seasiders began to dominate the middle of the park, with the impressive Liam Berner and Ryan Evans breaking up any attacking play from Penybont, and the width and pace of Harri Horwood and Gittens proved to be a constant threat.
Aber’s defence coped well with the long ball tactics from the home team, and the second half was much the same story, as Aber dominated from start to finish.
Goals from Harri Cottham and Osian Rees-Jones sealed an impressive victory as Aber moved to the top of the table, with 13 wins from 15 league games.
“I was really pleased with the performance today, it was one, if not our best performance of the season,” said Morgan. “Penybont have been in great form lately, but we dominated them from start to finish, with a very mature performance.
“We had a couple of boys missing, but the lads who came in did a great job, especially the central midfielders Liam Berner and Ryan Evans, who were outstanding, it shows the strength in depth of our squad.
“We have everything still left to play for; we are still in with a chance for the league, and we are in a Cup semi-final too. Everyone in the squad and coaching set up are buzzing, but it’s one game at a time.”
Aber had travelled to Penybont full of confidence following an impressive 8-0 victory at home to Llanelli two weeks ago.
Top scorer Liam Doherty netted twice, along with goals from Harri Horwood, Harri Cottham, Josh Crowl, Tom Evans, Osian Rees-Jones and Ryan Evans.
Aberystwyth now have five league games left to play, including four at home, and the last game of the season away to Swansea City, where they could have a great chance of winning the league title.
The Seasiders also have a Central Wales Youth Cup semi-final game on Wednesday, 21 March against Llanfair United at Latham Park, Newtown (8pm kick-off)..
