BARI Morgan’s Aberystwyth Town Under 19s side gave the Seasiders’ supporters reason to celebrate as they lifted the club’s first ever National League Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday.

Just 24 hours after the senior side had missed out in the Welsh Cup final at Newtown’s Latham Park, their talented youngsters overcame The New Saints Under-19s on the same pitch.

Having held off the challenge of runners-up Swansea City to claim the Development League (South) title last month, Aberystwyth faced the Northern champions in the national final.

In a close-fought encounter, captain Jack Rimmer’s penalty ultimately earned a 1-0 win over the Saints, which also went some way to making up for the previous day’s disappointment.

"I could not be more proud of this special bunch of the players," said Morgan, who himself had captained Aberystwyth’s senior side in the 2009 Welsh Cup Final.

"It has been a pleasure managing them this season. They well and truly deserve all the praise they get for their efforts and commitment."

In a tense game, the Seasiders kept their defensive shape superbly, with Lee Jenkins outstanding at centre back, and Rimmer anchoring central midfield.

They also broke dangerously, with right back Tom Evans catching the eye with some buccaneering runs, whilst top scorer Liam Doherty worked like a trojan up front and Harri Horwood threatened down the left.

The breakthrough came after 36 minutes when Rimmer - who was an unused sub in the Welsh Cup Final - was upended in the box, and he got up to confidently score from the penalty spot.

The Seasiders kept things tight, restricting to the Saints to half chances, whilst looking very dangerous on the break, and ran out fully deserving Champions of Wales.
