BWLCH equestrian Fiona Griffiths has been selected to represent Wales at the Home International Endurance Championships in Scotland from 4-6 September.

Griffiths, owner of Golden Castle Riding Stables, will compete with her 17-year-old Anglo-Arabian gelding, Warrens Hill Caszidy (Cid).

Cid, bred by Leslie Dunn, spent time in France away from competition before being gifted to Griffiths in 2023. Despite having only a relatively short competitive partnership, the pair have impressed enough to earn national selection.

“Given that our competitive record together has had a few sporadic moments, I am especially proud that we have been selected as a combination to fly the flag for Wales,” said Griffiths.

Preparation for endurance competition takes place across the challenging terrain of the Brecon Beacons. Griffiths and Cid regularly train on the mountains behind their home, while beach sessions at Kenfig Sands and work on local gallops form part of their conditioning programme.

“Our hill at home is usually our best training ground, but the recent dry conditions have made it quite slippery, so we have adapted our routine with trips to the gallops,” Griffiths explained.

Looking ahead to Scotland, she expects the conditions underfoot to be one of the biggest tests.

“The main challenge will be the weather and adjusting to deeper going than we’ve experienced recently. Our priority is to ride to the conditions, stay safe and complete strongly.”

Griffiths is supported by a dedicated team including husband Brian, chief crew member Sam, vet Georgina and farrier Tee Jay.

Reflecting on her years in the sport, she said endurance riding is as much about personal improvement as competition.

“I have been a member for many years, and endurance is always about competing against yourself, asking how you can improve, how you can train smarter, and learning something new from every horse you ride.”
