LOCAL fencer and Aberystwyth Fencing Club coach Oliver Massey has returned from the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Nigeria with an outstanding four-medal haul while representing Wales.

Massey enjoyed a remarkable tournament, claiming individual gold in the veteran men's sabre, individual silver in the veteran men's épée and individual bronze in the veteran men's foil. He also helped Team Wales secure gold in the veteran men's team épée event.

Massey's success reflects years of dedication to the sport.

A well-established figure in Welsh and British veteran fencing, he has represented both Wales and Great Britain in senior and veteran competitions.

Although primarily an épée specialist, the right-handed fencer has achieved success across all three weapons, including foil and sabre. In his 40s, he continues to compete at a high level on both the domestic and international stage.

His latest achievements build on an impressive fencing career that includes representing Wales at the 2022 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in London, where he helped secure a bronze medal in the veteran men's team épée competition.

Massey has also competed regularly in the British Veterans Championships, Welsh National Championships and other major open tournaments.

Away from competition, Massey coaches at Aberystwyth Fencing Club, a welcoming club open to adults and children of all abilities.

The club will launch its next beginners' course in September, with all equipment provided for newcomers wishing to try the sport.
