Dust wasn’t a problem as youngsters from all over the country arrived in West Wales for the second round of the Welsh Open Youth Hare and Hounds series.
Organised by the Dyfed Dirt Bike Club, the event attracted a healthy entry of over 130 riders ranging in age from four to 17 years old, and with heavy overnight rain the tracks they raced on were very muddy.
The first race at Dolgoch farm, Brongest, near Newcastle Emlyn was for beginner/novice riders. After 40 minutes of hard riding Abergavenny rider Theo Jones crossed the line first on his Honda with 13 laps followed by Richard Price from Llandinam with 12 laps whilst Crossgates rider Alfie Lewis completed the podium with third overall and 11 laps.
Race 2 saw the riders head into woodland as well as race on the slippery grassy fields. Gruff Morgan of Aberystwyth took the win with 10 laps finishing a clear two and a half minutes ahead William Evans whilst third was Charlie Waters from Beriew 12 seconds down.
Race 3 was a full blown lap using fields on both sides of the valley as well as some far more technical sections in the wood. The race was dominated by Lampeter’s Sion Evans on his Husqavarna taking the overall win on the day, ahead of Cilmeri’s Rhydian Rees, also riding a Husqavarna, with Ifan Jones from Pontrhydyfendigaid claiming third overall on his KTM.
The Sunday morning’s sprint enduro had an entry of around 70 riders with some of the youth riders from the previous days racing pitting themselves against some of Britain’s top Enduro Championship riders.
Charlie Chater took the overall win on his Yamaha with Edward Jones from Llanidloes runner up on his KTM and Jack Heaththird. Sion Evans, the first of the youth riders, finished fourth overall to claim a class win on his Husqavarna.
In the 12-15 youth class, Alfie Davies took the win ahead of Rees Jones whilst the Clubman win went to Dan Lewis. The Expert class saw Adam James claim victory followed home by Ash Jones, with Aled Humphreys of Llan Ffestiniog third.
The Sportsman class win went to Alex Jones from Swansea with Neil Davies second and Michael Davies third.
The Under-19s youth class saw Sion Evans take the win ahead of Rhydian Rees with Dewi Little third. In the Vets class, Paul Herbert was first ahead of Rob Cooke and William Jones.
