ABERYSTWYTH’s reign at the top of Division Two West last lasted but a week as they succumbed to a narrow 19-14 defeat at third-placed Tycroes last weekend - but coach Emlyn Jones is looking for three wins from three games to secure them the league title.

The Plascrug men are three points behind frontrunners Penclawdd, who bounced back from their defeat at Aberystwyth the previous weekend with a 42-37 home triumph against Pontarddulais.

Aber, however, have a game in hand, and are hoping a big crowd will get behind for their final home match on Saturday against Amman Utd, who they beat 38-31 in the reverse fixture in September.

Tricky assignments follow at fourth-placed Pontyberem next Tuesday and at fifth-placed Mumbles the following Saturday, but Aber can still win the Division.

Club secretary Alan Jones said: “Aberystwyth will look back on the loss away against Tycroes with more than a slight feeling of squandering a chance to consolidate their top of the table position.

“Their losing bonus point, combined with Penclawdd’s bonus point win now puts them three points behind the Cocklemen, but they do have a game in hand.

“Aber’s final three games take place in a single week, and on Saturday they welcome Amman United to Plascrug, and the following week travel to Mumbles to replay the match that had been abandoned.

“They have arranged to make their trip to Pontyberem between those dates, with an evening kick-off on Tuesday, 19 April.

“A few nervous encounters lay ahead, but their first priority now will be to sign off at Plascrug in style this weekend. It could even be the last Division Two game at Plascrug for the foreseeable future!”.
