NANT Conwy eventually secured their second successive North Wales Cup triumph by overcoming Bala 20-9 in a game that never really got going, despite the efforts of both sides at Eirias Park.A large crowd of supporters from both clubs saw a game played in the true spirit of rugby, with both sides battling very hard to secure a victory for their team.

Within 12 minutes, Delwyn Jones kicked a successful penalty to put Nant three points ahead, following an offside infringement by Bala. Five minutes later, however, Rhydian Jones levelled the score with a penalty kick in front of the posts.

Both teams attacked and counter-attacked, and committed a number of handling errors in the process, much to the frustration of coaches and players alike. Finally, the impasse was broken as Nant’s Jack Moriarty scored a brilliant individual try to put them ahead by 8-3.

Emrys Evans then stunned everyone when he found a gap in the Bala defence to score their second try of the match. With seconds of the first half remaining, however, Rhydian Jones once again kicked a successful penalty, to keep Bala in contention, and at half time Nant Conwy led 13-6.

The first quarter of the second half saw Bala attacking relentlessly, but never being able to penetrate the Nant defence.

Their efforts were rewarded, however, with another penalty, which Rhydian Jones converted easily to bring Bala back to within four points of the league leaders.

From then on Nant Conwy were relentless in their attacking, spending the majority of the time in the Bala half and coming close to scoring on several occasions.

Then, following an Arthur Lennon drop goal attempt, which hit the upright, Aeron Jones pounced on the rebound to score Nant Conwy’s s third try of the match.

Delwyn Jones converted, putting the match beyond Bala’s reach and Nant secured the Senior Cup with a 20-9 win.
