It is still tense at the top of the Division Two North table, with all three promotion rivals winning on the weekend - and Dolgellau need to win three of their remaining four matches, gaining two bonus points, to secure their elevation.

They did all they could as they registered an emphatic 62-0 win over Rhyl, scoring 10 tries on a glorious spring afternoon.

The first try of the game came after 10 minutes as flanker Iwan Pugh’s march up the centre of the park saw stand-off Dafydd Roberts find centre Henri Roberts to dash down the right side for the score.

Only three minutes later it was Dafydd Roberts again, this time with the boot ahead that was expertly gathered by centre Jac Roberts to score under the posts. Henri Roberts successfully added the conversion to give the hosts a 12-0 lead.

The visitors coped well at the set-pieces, but they squandered their possession and opportunities with poor execution.

Dolgellau scored their third try on the half hour mark, with Iwan Pugh again creating an opening that eventually saw winger Gareth Hughes sprint home. Roberts converted, and only four minutes later, the bonus point score came.

This time flanker Guto Jones created the chance, and Henri Roberts and Gareth Hughes’ neat inter passing saw stand-off Dafydd Roberts score a great team try. Henri Roberts converted to make it 26-0.

With only seconds of the first half remaining a meandering run by speed merchant Jake Hinge was halted a metre out. Hooker Celt Lewis, however, appeared from nowhere, and he fed stalwart No 8 Dylan Llewelyn to score the simplest of tries for a 31-0 lead at the interval.

Dolgellau winger Jake Hinge scored a second half hat-trick, all within 23 second half minutes, to stay ahead in the try scoring stakes, with 16 in all competitions.

Replacement Dewi Thomas added another score, and Hinge converted three of these tries as Dolgellau took a 57-0 lead.

The visitors pinned Dolgellau back for the remainder of the match, but not before replacements Carwyn Pugh and Rob Pugh made space for wing Gareth Hughes to go over for Dolgellau’s 10th try, and his second score of the game.

Dolgellau will be at home to Newtown on Saturday, 6 April, whilst in the other matches Nant Conwy Seconds host Rhyl, and Welshpool are at home to Llanidloes.
