HAVING started the season with three league defeats, Bro Ffestiniog made it three wins on the bounce in Division One North, and they could take plenty of heart from a 33-13 home win over Llangefni.
Bro Ffestiniog had once again started the match well, taking the game to the visitors from the off, and they managed to score their first try of the game after 10 minutes following sustained pressure.
Bro went through the phases and playing with the referee’s advantage, it was Aron ‘Smyr’ Roberts who went over in the corner, and Gareth ‘Gaz’ Davies slottedan excellent conversion from out wide.
The hosts, however, did allow Llangefni to stay in the game, and it wasn’t long until Bro were penalised and the visitors got first three points on the scoreboard.
It was a similar story for the next 10 minutes, with Bro applying most of the pressure and working through the phases, and neat handling and clever offloading allowed Dan P Jones to run in for a try untouched, again converted by Gaz Davies.
Almost immediately after kick-off, however, Llangefni were awarded another penalty and their full back made no mistake as he reduced the gap to 14-6.
Bro though, were in determined mood and after being awarded a penalty of their own, they kicked to the corner and then kept the ball well, before Dewi James powered over from close range, which was successfully converted by Gaz Davies to extend their advantage to 21-6.
Bro looked to be in control, but ill-discipline around the breakdown allowed Llangefni to kick to the corner and following a couple of phases, their big second row went over for a try, which was successfully converted and closed the deficit to 21-13 at the half way point.
The hosts were pleased with their overall attacking play in the first half, but were also disappointed that they allowed their opponents to remain within two scores.
Bro started the second half with purpose, and it wasn’t long until they extended their lead. A nice break through the middle was recycled quickly and the ball was fed wide left and allowed winger Aron Humphreys to go over untouched in the corner. The conversion missed.
Llangefni had their moments and worked hard to try and get back into the match, but Bro kept their discipline and defended very well to shut them out.
There was still a try in the game and it was Bro who again went through numerous phases in the opposition’s half and it was Aron Aspden who then picked a great line to take the pass and score out wide. Mathew Haydn kicked a great conversion to take the scoreline to 33-13.
Bro pushed for more, but unfortunately they couldn’t break down the Llangefni defence and it ended 33-13 to the hosts.
It was an encouraging performance by the home side and just reward for their hard work on the training field after making a slow start to the current season.
Bro Ffestiniog now have two free Saturdays before their next game when they travel to face a Pwllheli side that have had a very good start to the season. Thanks went to the large number of supporters, it is very much appreciated. Match ball sponsored by Trish and Chips takeaway.
