CARDIGAN produced a nine-try winning performance to keep their promotion push on track with an emphatic 59-0 home win over Llangwm - and they now require three wins on the bounce to send them back up into Division Two.

Colin Horscroft’s men, who are just a point behind league leaders Haverfordwest, face St Davids this weekend, followed by a trip to Merlins Bridge, home of the Blues - and two victories would set up a title decider away at Milford on 30 April.

Making a welcome return to the Cardigan side, after a long break through a combination of injury and paternity, was skipper and number eight Llyr Griffiths.

He made an instant impact when he barged his way over after just a few minutes to claim the opening try, and this was converted by fly half Iestyn Crompton.

It was not long before the Cardis breached the Llangwm try line once again when Griffiths picked up from the base of a powerful scrum and he dived over for his second try, converted by Crompton.

Further tries followed through winger Rhydian Jenkins, after a fine break by full back Alun Jenkins, and the half was brought to an end when centre Sion Hughes dived over in the clubhouse corner to claim the important bonus point score, superbly converted by Crompton.

Cardigan continued to spin the ball about on a pitch that was turning in to a sticky quagmire following the heavy rain, and another try followed when full back Jenkins sprinted over after offering a cheeky show and go - and the extras were duly converted once again by Crompton.

Winger Jenkins added to his earlier effort with a try out wide, following a super offload from full back Jenkins, before flanker Kieran Hurley was on hand to accept a pass before he walked in for try number seven, converted by Crompton.

Llangwm, who have endured a very difficult season, never gave up the fight, despite being up against it for most of the game, with No 8 Ian Griffiths and pack colleagues Dan Chesmer, James Lewis and Gavin Jones working their socks off.

Half backs Rhys Mason and Steve Picton tried their best to keep things going forward, but Cardigan kept the pressure on, with scrum half Aaron Evans being the main catalyst with some sniping runs.

It came as no surprise when the half century of points was notched up with tries from Gruff Lewis and Rhydian Jenkins, who completed his hat-trick. Crompton also capped a fine game with his seventh conversion, again from the touchline.

Cardigan now need to keep on winning big if they are to snatch the promotion place from Haverfordwest, starting at second-from-bottom St Davids on Saturday.
