LLANIDLOES suffered late heartache when missing out on the Cambrian Training Mid Wales Cup with a 13-9 defeat to old rivals COBRA in a hard-fought final.
A third penalty from Adam Price five minutes from time put Llani within sight of the trophy on home soil, but the Meifod men had other ideas as flanker Lee Hughes went over for a converted score to seal victory with the last play of the game.
Price had kicked two penalties to give Llani the edge, but COBRA hit back to level with fly half Will Worthington landing penalties either side of half-time.
It was nip and tuck as both sides defended with resolve, before the boot of Price restored the lead in front of a large and enthusiastic Llanidloes crowd.
COBRA stormed back and, in the dying minutes of the game, a break from the base of the scrum by flanker Lee Hughes, led to the touchdown that secured victory, with Worthington also converting.
There was also drama in the final of the Cambrian Training Mid Wales Shield as a penalty goal by Dan Earle earned Welshpool a dramatic 13-10 win over Builth Seconds.
Pool hit the ground running with an early try from No 8 Ryan Goodwin, converted by Earle, but Builth upped their tempo and reduced the arrears before the break with a penalty from Kyle Hopkins.
Earle kicked a second penalty early in the second-half, but neither side managed to convert spells of pressure into further points until two minutes from time when Builth hammered at the Pool line and Rhys Lewis broke through to score, and Hopkins’ conversion levelled the score.
Straight from kick-off, however, Pool were awarded a penalty, and Earle kept his composure to slot the ball over the posts to complete a dramatic victory.
