CRYMYCH’s talented youth team completed a terrific treble as they followed up an undefeated league season and Griffiths Cup triumph by beating Pembroke Dock Harlequins’ 22-0 in the Pembrokeshire Youth Cup Final.

Crymych won both league games against their rivals, but needed to adapt to the heat in front of an excellent crowd to take the silverware.

The pitch at the Lewis Lloyd Ground was inevitably rock hard and the Quins suffered an early blow when captain Charlie Dearden sustained a rib injury and he later had to leave the field.

His loss seemed to galvanise the Quins, and despite playing against the breeze were still level after a 0-0 interval scoreline as their pack tore into their opposition and forced them into errors.

Jack Davies, Euan Owens, Tom Clarkson, Tom Barrass and Matthew Washbourne all threw themselves into all the turnovers and produced the platform for Liam Scourfield, Jack Malitte and Harry Owen to link well with halves Geraint Powell and Ben Hathaway to keep the Quins pushing forward.

Yet it was Crymych who seemed to have grabbed the first try when quick hands from Josh Hewins and Ifan Phillips put Carwyn Vaughan away on the right, but assistant Sion Edwards spotted a foot in touch.

Then outside half Jake Jenkins had two long-range penalty attempts for Crymych which fell short of the target, whilst the Quins had strong runs by Rhys Bradney, Harry Lawrence and Aaron Cookson which came to naught as the total commitment of both teams failed to produce a single point.

Despite playing into the strong breeze, Crymych looked sharper after the interval as Osian Davies joined the fray and began to join forwards Harri Vaughan, Llyr Evans, Ryan Bean, Matthew Freebury and especially Llyr Davies in putting Crymych on the front foot.

Only a knock-on prevented a Crymych score after some quick passing in midfield.

At the other end, Quins’ powerhouse winger Blake Hughes put in a terrific run, but it was Crymych who finally turned pressure into points when Jenkins and Phillips put Llyr Davies in to score an unconverted try.

Worse was to follow for the Quins as they lost possession in midfield and the combined efforts of Stefan Harries, Lee Griffiths, Sion Evans and Osian Edwards put replacement Gethin Davies over at the posts for a try that Jenkins converted.

Second row Ryan Bean was the architect of Crymych’s third try as he made a run that any centre would have been proud of, before off-loading the scoring pass to put skipper Ifan Phillips in for an unconverted try.

It says a huge amount about the Quins’ resolve that they didn’t slacken their efforts in the slightest as Jack Malitte, Harry Owen and Liam Scourfield led the way.

Crymych, however, had the final say when Quins were penalised on the attack by referee Charlie Watts and a Llyr Davies’ break saw Osian Edwards gallop 60 metres for an unconverted try.
