THE final scoreline suggested an easy win for Dolgellau away at Menai Bridge, but they were made to work hard for every one of their 10 tries.
Their clinical finishing put a cruel look to the defeat, whilst the match was a personal triumph for Dolgellau second row Danny Evans, who capped an outstanding display with a brace of tries.
Evans’ first score came after only five minutes, after a move started in his own half by Dolgellau flanker Dylan Llewelyn.
Only two minutes later, however, Menai Bridge stand-off Dion McGrath put his side on the scoreboard with a penalty.
Evans’ second try followed on the 10 minute mark, after centre Dan Brazier’s break upfield, to put Dolgellau 3-10 ahead.
Menai Bridge’s young side were committed to the cause and intent on building on an opening day win at Bangor, but they lacked experience and Dolgellau crossed for three further first half tries.
Second row Bryn Jones, full back Gerwyn Pugh and centre Dan Brazier all went over, with Brazier converting all three tries to take the scores to 3-31 at the break.
The visitors’ first try only two minutes after the break was a peach. Full back Gerwyn Pugh glided down left touchline, and all the backline was used to move the ball to right wing Kage Jubiec who exchanged passes with centre Gareth Hughes before going over himself for a great team try.
Skipper, Dewi Thomas and flanker Leon Brooks combined to put scrum half Osian Morris in for Dolgellau’s seventh try, to make it 3-43 with Brazier’s conversion.
Menai Bridge, to their credit, engineered a period of pressure themselves and were duly rewarded whan centre Dave Williams broke free, and eventually full back Rowan Brooker went over in the corner for a richly deserved try, to make it 8-43.
The visitors then drove home their overall superiority, scoring three further tries.
Wing Rob Pugh, second row, Bryn Jones - crossing for his second of the match to cap another memorable performance in only his second senior game - and former skipper Gerwyn Thomas completed the scoring, crossing late on to make it 8-58.
• BALA were in free-scoring mood as they made it two wins from two games in Division One North with an emphatic 58-5 win at Colwyn Bay last weekend.
Guto Lynch and John Emrys Davies both went over twice for the visitors, and there were further tries from Miallt Roberts, Robin Jones, Endaf Jones, Tudor Lynch and Ilan Rowlands, with the reliable boot of Rhydian Jones adding five conversions and a penalty to complete the scoreline.
