LLANYBYDDER were looking to avenge their narrow home defeat earlier in season when they travelled to face Fishguard in Division Two West last weekend.

The Seagulls, however, registered a 24-13 win to complete a league double over the bottom-placed visitors, who played far better than their lowly status would indicate, on a pitch that was made heavy by persistent rain.

As in other recent away matches, Llanybydder once again produced a very brave performance to match the home side, but one disappointing period culminated in three quick tries from the home side.

It was the visitors who had first use of the strong wind, and fly-half Steff Richards slotted a penalty to take the lead.

Fishguard’s defence was strong, however, and the home side had a purple patch in the second quarter, leading to a try apiece for their marauding back row.

Openside Chis Shousha was first to score, after supporting a blindside move from a scrum, to give the hosts the lead.

Fishguard continued to press, and after a succession of infringements, referee Jason Ludgate showed a yellow card to loose head Zach Lowther, after a high tackle.

The Seagulls took full advantage when a strong scrum drove the visitors back, enabling No 8 Simon James to score a try, converted by fly-half Alun George.

Then Fishguard added the try of the match as flanker Jordan James completed a hat-trick of back row tries, but this time from fully 40 metres. He twisted out of the initial tackle, sold two dummies to fool the cover defence and crossed in the corner - and Alun George put the icing on the cake with a cracking conversion.

Fishguard had an excellent 17-3 interval lead, and the strong wind in their favour in the second half, but it was a much improved performance by the visitors after the break, as the Llanybydder forwards carried the ball into the elements.

Substitute Rhys Morris, who was playing at centre, produced several surging runs, which eventually led to a try for the skipper and No 8 Ricky Davies.

Llanybydder started to play with more confidence, having to keep ball in hand, and the forwards and backs produced several promising moves. Blindside Bleddyn Jones made a great run into the home 22, and passed to the supporting Aled Tandderi Evans to reduce the lead to 17-13, and bring the visitors within range of at least a deserved bonus point, and even the possibility of an unlikely victory.

From the kick-off, however, Fishguard were awarded a line-out in the Llanybydder 22, and after a succession of phases they worked flanker Shousha over to give the home side their fourth try, and crucially take away Llanybydder’s bonus.
