WHILST there were more important games going on elsewhere, Dolgellau and Llangefni served up their own cracking contest on the Marian, despite both clubs already being relegated.
Dolgellau just about edged it 15-13, with two tries by wing Llion Lloyd.
Still smarting from a woeful performance only a week ago at Cae Smyrna on the Island, it was Dolgellau who grasped the initiative and went ahead, courtesy of a penalty to full-back, Dion Jones after five minutes.
Hard working Llangefni, however, were always a threat and clawed their way level after a quarter of an hour with a penalty to stand-off Rhys Hughes.
Three minutes later a speculative kick for position from Dolgellau No 8, Dewi Thomas, was well short, but was gathered by flanker Iwan Pugh, who sped away down the right touchline before releasing wing, Llion Lloyd to go over for his first try. Full back Dion Jones converted for a 10-3 lead.
Llangefni dominated the second quarter and prop Jordan Scott went close, and some great home defending ensured the half ended on the same score.
Stand-off Hughes put over his second penalty within five minutes of the restart to bring Llangefni within four points, but the pendulum swung again in Dolgellau’s favour after 15 minutes.
Skipper Gerwyn Thomas put centre Jac Roberts and full back Dion Jones free in space to see wing Llion Lloyd cross for a great score to put Dolgellau 15-6 ahead.
Going into the last 10 minutes, outstanding No 8 Dewi Thomas received a yellow card, and a tense ending was guaranteed as Llangefni hit back immediately with a try by wing Carwyn Owen, which was converted by Hughes to make the scoreline 15-13.
That is how the match ended, and full credit must be given to both teams for playing the fixture in a good, hard, competitive spirit - they will meet again next season, but this time in Division Two North.
