DOLGELLAU continued to press for promotion with a bonus point 35-17 victory over Wrexham at the Marian.

Wrexham showed plenty of intent in the opening exchanges, forcing Dolgellau to defend deep into their 22, before Gerwyn Thomas managed a clearance to ease the pressure and allow the hosts to settle into the game.

It was Dolgellau, however, who managed to open the scoring on eight minutes, with a try by Danny Evans, converted by Henri Roberts.

Dolgellau extended their lead through the boot of Henri Roberts six minutes later, to put them 10 points to the good following a Wrexham infringement on the Dolgellau 10 metre line.

Henri Roberts added seven further points on the 20 minute mark to put Dolgellau into what looked like being a commanding lead.

Wrexham then broke back however with a hat-trick of tries from their right wing, one before the interval and two within five minutes of the start of the second half.

With only one successful conversion from three tries, the scoreline stood at 17 all.

Wrexham were unable to push into the lead when Armani Roberts was adjudged to have knocked on over the line. Dolgellau cleared from the resulting scrum and started to regain composure.

Henri Roberts further added to his own personal tally shortly afterwards, after an infringement five metres from the Wrexham try line had resulted in a penalty.

Wrexham’s discipline at the breakdown resulted in two penalties, with Roberts adding three more points from the boot to lead 23-17.

That lead was extended by scrum half Jac Roberts almost 30 minutes into the second period, when he gathered the ball at the base of a ruck and dived over to raise hopes of a bonus point.

Gerwyn Thomas combined with centre Gareth Hughes to clinch that extra point at the death, which was converted by Roberts to take his personal tally to 20 points for the afternoon.

Dolgellau will be away to Llangollen this Saturday.
