DOLGELLAU moved four points clear at the top of Divison Two North West as six top drawer tries at Y Waun sealed a convincing 37-7 win on their travels.

Dolgellau took the lead when Rhyl’s indiscipline cost them dear, and visiting skipper Gerwyn Thomas slotted over a penalty kick after 10 minutes of play.

Four minutes later, following a break upfield by skipper Thomas, Rhyl were caught off guard from a quickly taken penalty and No 8 Danny Evans put in wing Henri Roberts in at the left corner, for his first of two tries, to make it 8-0.

Rhyl were organised in defence and enjoyed plenty of possession in the latter stages of the half, but they could not penetrate a resolute Dolgellau defence, and the half ended well poised for the visitors.

A swift counter-attack involving Thomas and scrum half Jac Roberts then resulted in centre Gareth Hughes putting in full-back Gerwyn Pugh for a great score within 10 minutes into the second period.

Thomas successfully added the conversion to put Dolgellau into a 15-0 lead.

Five minutes later the outstanding Leon Brooks won quick ball at a line-out, and that led to centre Dylan Evans breaking clean through to score under the posts for another great score. Thomas, once again, put over the conversion to make it 22-0.

After a quarter of an hour, flanker, Dylan Llewelyn was free to roam down the left touchline from the halfway, and wing Henri Roberts was in good support to finish in style for his second try of the match.

This made the score 27-0, but Rhyl responded well and winger Joe Warhurst looked a menace on a number of breaks.

It was centre Jack Hughes who finally put his side on the scoresheet after half an hour, after a persistent drive by the home eight. He also added the conversion for good measure to make the score 27-7.

Dolgellau, however, finished the match strongly, with skipper Gerwyn Thomas and Henri Roberts combining to put No 8 Danny Evans in for another excellent try with five minutes of the game remaining.

He also crossed for his second try in the last minute, following a great break from centre Gareth Hughes, who found Iwan Pugh to put him in for the sixth Dolgellau try, to complete the scoring at 37-7.
