DOLGELLAU got back to winning ways with an impressive bonus point 32-3 win over Bethesda, to set up a nail-biting finale to season - their fourth successive home win ensuring there is all still to play for to remain in the top division.
A largely inexperienced but hard-working Bethesda contributed fully to the entertainment, where both sides were willing to use their three-quarters whenever the chance came to play a wide game, and four of Dolgellau’s five tries came from their three-quarters.
The home side took the lead after 12 minutes with skipper Gerwyn Thomas slotting over a penalty kick, before their first try came after a quarter of an hour.
Scrum half Owain Thomas and flanker Guto Jones prizing the ball loose from a Bethesda scrum, and wing Rob Pugh was away to release full-back Dylan Evans for the score to make it 8-0.
Going into the second quarter Dolgellau scored their second try, with prolific try scorer and hooker, Geraint Evans crossing for his eighth try of the season.
Stand off Gerwyn Thomas was accurate with the conversion for a 15-0 cushion.
It was Thomas who switched the play to blind side to set up in-form full-back Dylan Evans for his second try of the match, and his sixth try of this campaign, following some hard yardage gained by second row, Marios Jones. Thomas slotted over the conversion.
Bethesda had occasional flurries into Dolgellau’s territory, but could not breach their solid defence, and had to settle for a penalty by full-back Daniel Prichard, to put the visitors on the scoreboard after half an hour.
All the points were scored in the first half of this free flowing match, and Dolgellau centre Gareth Hughes finished off a sweeping backs move to score Dolgellau’s fourth try with five minutes of the half to go - to secure a most important bonus point and make it 27-3.
On the stroke of half time Dolgellau’s fifth try came with the inspirational Dewi Thomas carving out an opening for skipper Gerwyn Thomas to find centre Hughes, and he broke through for his second try to cap a fine display and make the score 32-3 at the interval.
Bethesda’s youngsters had showed plenty of spirit in the second half, and prop Dylan Owen came close to scoring, but there was no denying Dolgellau their richly deserved victory.
It sets up what will become a shoot out with the clubs around them at the base of the division, starting this Saturday at Llandudno.
